My 2006 Grand Prix HID headlights review - video and pics

This is a review for my 9006 JLM 4300K HID conversion kit. Installation was simple and took about 10 minutes - everything was plug and play. Secured both ballasts inside the fenders with provided tie wraps and double sided adhesive tape. Only thing to watch out for is inverse polarity - power plugs can go either way to accomodate varying manufacturers. It's simple to spot - if it doesn't light up - reverse the power plug. Be careful while twisting the bulbs in place - they don't have the "L" shaped back, so you have to use pliers to get them in place. Put some cloth around the bulb base and twist it in very carefully to avoid breaking the bulb. Driving at night is great - beam dispersion is the same as the standard halogen bulbs, but about 3 times brighter. There's no "glare" issue when viewed from the outside. The reflectors are well designed and focus the HID light output on the road surface, and don't "kick it up" in other drivers' eyes. Warm up time is about 15 seconds. Re-spark is instant if you shut it off and on. I strongly recommend this kit. Also, for the price, you might as well buy several kits, that way you have spares in the event of bulb or ballast failures. I give it 4 out of 5 stars based on not having it in the car long enough to test the longevity of the kit.

My solution to the ever popular DRL issue.. During the day time, the lights don't come on until you put the car in gear. After engine start-up, switch your headlight dial to "off" position. Now the lights won't come on at low intensity when you put the car in gear, avoiding the possible ballast damage. At night time, the lights kick on at full power anyway, so you don't have to worry about it. Sorry, I don't have a more permanent solution at this time.

how do you like your HID's after it's been several months? Would you still recommend them?

03GTPLE, The first kit I got was defective, so I had to send it back and get a refund (one of the power packs died). However the second kit I bought from a different distributor works perfectly. It's the same JLM kit as the first one except this one is 6000k instead of 4300k.

Couple quick notes. 6K HID is noticeably more blue than the 4300. It's not to the point of being unusable or "ghetto" looking, but still, does not look like OEM anymore (at least to me). When on the highway side by side with the 4300 you can definitely tell the difference.

The vendor I bought the kits from is HID Outlet on Amazon.com. The person I had to work with when I had some issues with another kit I bought for my other car was very helpful. You don't have to send anything back, they just send you the new parts. So even though you might have some issues in the beginning they will fix it and make it right. Warranty on the kit is one year. If you going with cheaper kits, I recommend getting 2 in case of "failures", so you dont have to switch back to halogen until the parts arrive.

My next kit is going to be from the same distributor, but I will try a different brand - "MaxLux" - it supposed to be a much better quality kit from what the HID Outlet told me. I will get either 4300 or 5000, but no higher than that to keep it as OEM looking as possible. Also, even though it doesn't apply to this car, the 9003 kits from MaxLux have proper light shield around them that only allows light to be reflected up in the headlight preventing the blinding effect of the cheaper kits that lack the proper light shielding. I had to make my own light shield out of foil to keep the light from getting into the "high beam" area of the headlight.

Another thing.. to get around the DRL issues, if you keep your parking lights on all the time, the DRLs will not come on. The parking lights have a 5 minute time out, so they will shut off automatically and will not run your battery down.

After two weeks the one side started to shut off on me. it goes back on after i hit the switch off and on. Any idea why its doing that?????? I even put capacitors on and its still doing it. Just the one side is doing it. the other works great!!!

its because of the lack of current to the ballast as you turn on the key. install a relay and do a separate wiring for the kit and you will be good.

The OEM hid's manufactures use are 5000k's(the "super whites") so the closest after market kit u can get is 6000k's it has a very slight bluish tint to it but not noticeable. buy xentec brand HID kits. i have been using em for like 3years now on my eclipse. one ballast started failing around 20months but it had 3year warranty and was covered for a full replacement. last summer i installed a set of 6k's on my GP and works like a champ. :th_thumbsup-wink:
