I've been looking at buying a 2002 GTP with a supercharged 3.8L motor that someone local (mpls. area) has for sale.
Before I go to look at it I was wondering if anyone can give me a few tips on what to look for and ask when I see it. He said the recall on the oil drip was dealership fixed. It has a 133,000 miles on it. Doe's this engine have the LIM gasket problem as the 3.1's do?
Thank's in advance folk's!
Also, here's the Craigslist ID # Mpls. listings.

recall only covered front valve cover gasket.. the rear leaks bad also.yes they have LIM probs.. see if that issue has been resolved with the GM metal gaskets. oil pan gaskets can leak pretty good at times.. test drive for awhile until all fluids and parts get to operating temp.. pay attention to trans shifts see if its jerky, slow, firm shifts. knowing what i know i would have gotten a compression test on cylinders... pistons arent hard to chip. and sometimes can leave no signs of being chipped... im sure someone else will chime in on other things to look for. if all these things seem to be in good order u prob have a good car. also if LIM isnt leaking yet... switch to green coolant if they havent already done so.

I bought a bore scope and love it. I buy and sell toys all the time and you would be suprised how people try to say "its in good shape no know problems"... I look in the cyc and the pistons are chipped and or the walls are scored bad. I just look at them and shake my head.... deff do a compression test and drive it kinda hard for them shift points. also check to see if there is any oil in the coolant overfill bottle and coolant in the oil (milkeshake color) let us know .

Thanks for chiming in so far guy's. I should have mentioned that this won't be my primary car but more of good weather car. I have a 2001 SE that I use as my main car. I also saw the video on the LIM replacement and feel I can do it myself if this car need's it. The SE already had it's LIM replaced (by midas and they did a great job, no problems at all so far) I'll stay tuned here....

It looks like a good car from the listing. Says its a modded car and he knows what he is doing. So with that info and all the supporting mods with the car I would take a look at it. I looking for a another grand prix myself and seeing how I live right around your area and I would take a look at it, but I dont have the money yet. So jump on it.

Thank's Five, i will try to get together with the seller sometime soon. I have the funds but it's a matter of finding the right car. I ideally would like to go out of state to get it if i can get the time. You know the drill on Minnesota cars. By the way, great name...:th_laugh-lol2:

Ask the guy what exhaust mods, if its less than a PLOG and a 3" downpipe then I'd probably skip it.
Thank's Matt. Also, and i'm guessing you read the CL listing. I have two concerns:
1) The LIM gasket hasn't been replaced on this car
2) Do the mod's add to the price of the car?
The car Bluebook's in excellent condition for $4800.00.
Should I go for a lower price because the LIM gasket hasn't been replaced and how much, if any do the mod's add to the price of the car or are the mod's a liability?....

I am not sure on how to check this, but make sure the passenger side isnt leaking around the windshield. Ponds for floorboards are uncool. This can be tricky as mine only leaked sometimes, had no consistent pattern.

i guess just look to see if the deflector is there, if not, put it in anyway. its cheap and preventing a potential problem

Besides water in the car, the leak would have a direct shot at, i think its the blower motor. Anyways the result is not having any in cabin air curculation. No ac no heat no defogger.

ya, looks good, but for an "auto detailer" you would think he should know that it isnt "black" leather interior. Defenitly look into the "exhaust mods" cuz without headers, or at least a plog, the 3.4 pully can do allot of damage. And as for the price, the part where it says "ASKING $5,500" means he is willing to deal. dont know how much he is willing to go, but that is plenty of miles, so $5500 might be a little high.
Good luck!!
