Shifter Linkage

Hi Dave,
My tranny is making a wierd whinning noise and would not shift into any gears
after i installed a wizzard air box..
I looked to see if i had pulled any wires from the pcm but everythings seems
fine there..
When i removed the wiz box i noticed the clip that holds the shifter
linkage was down by the PCM try...
After many trys and farting around with this i have gears but with some slippage and whinning noise...
Any help with this problem
Please see pics
Thanks John

Note when i say i had no gears No revers, drive, 3rd, 2nd, or first...,
Now i have gears but with some slippages and you can hear the tran whine and all gears seem to have the same sound..
there is no clunking in to gear or can you feel it shift as you go through the gears..
Thanks

If your trans worked corectly before you did the modification, you have to assume what you did in the modification caused the problem. First thing I would check for is that you popped a fuse, which in case would put you in fail safe mode, which means when you put it into the drive postiion you are now starting out of 3rd gear which would make it feel like you are driving with a clogged cat converter, but it will not shift. First things first put it in d, or one position below neutral, get a good idea of the feeling, then drop it down two shift positions to 2nd while you already started moving from the previous position of D on the shifter, now if you feel like it downshifts and picks up speed, you know you have a trans code set and you need to find out what that is before you can proceed.

I have all the gears now and because the clip came off
that shifter line is why i lost the gears..
when you step on the gas you can hear the tranny whine
all gears are working now but i did have to find the spot on the
cable to get them to work..
Too much one way no gears to much the other way same thing..
Today when i took it around the block it was slipping still and missing
after a little more playing the missing is almost gone but the whine noise is
still very much there..
Thanks John

could that have done damage? I know on the od rear drive ones if the cable was adjusted wrong it could cause damage.

Hi John, if the shifter linkage was disconnected and not but back in the same spot it will cause issues. The best thing to do is disconnect the clip you bumped loose so the cable is free in the sleeve. Reach down on the trans and feel the detents by moving the arm back and forth and notice where park position is, it has a longer travel into that detent and you should also feel and here a click from the park finger engaging, also the car will roll in the other gears as a simple check. Put the lever into D/4th position on the trans itself and then go in the car and put floor shifter into D/4th. Now push the clip back in and move the shifter in the car back and forth through the gears to make sure it feels like things line up. You know what the car felt like before so you are trying to match that. There are detents inside the shifter in the car and inside the trans and the need to match up or you could be in-between gears and cause slippage but sometimes there is enough slop to overcome this. I would also check for codes as there is no reason you should have a whining noise from the trans because of this. Are you positive the noise you are hearing just isnt from the new air box? If you went from a stock box to a wizaird box there is a noticable change in sound from the air filter area and the more you rev it the louder it gets. Whining noises are generally associated with high line pressure and i would be lead to believe that since it was fine before IF it is the trans making the noise. Is the intake temp sensor plugged in and working ok? Some data from a scanner could rule a few things out here.

Deleting this post, there is just no need for the BS.

SyntheticShield

What do you mean deleteing this post .... and what B.S....
Is a problem i have and is a real question sheesh...

Thanks Dave i will give that a try in the morning will
let you know how i made out..
thanks for the suppot man...
Thats what it feels like also that it is between gears just not quite right..
I Had a CAI and just bought the wiz
As for the noise i'm not sure.. and no i took the box back out to check
the problem out and get it fixed will not put it back untill it is right.
The noise is comming from the tranny and would almost be like the noise you would hear
with slipping bands in a rwd car... HTH
Is the intake temp sensor plugged in ... No it is not as the box is not in the car...

and a short drive later would like to say Wooooo hooo:th_thumbsup-wink:
car is driving great and seems to be back to normal...
A big thank you Dave for your Time and Understanding....

Thanks John and glad I could help out here and your car is back to normal! Maybe our resident genious will take this as some useful information to learn with instead of run his mouth when he has never experienced this exact problem before, but I am sure this will be another exception to him manning up for an appology since I dont know anything

Glad to hear you got it up and running and it is working again for you. I guess we can chalk that one up as indeed the shift linkage can cause that problem. Good work Trannyman.

Well we all know you do i mean look were i live Ontario Canada ..
Dave i would like to post your Banner up on my Cardomain site for anyone
