Help with 2007 Dash Rattle

Hello,

First post on this site... I have a nasty rattle that seems to be caused by the clear plastic window over the instrument cluster that is driving me nuts! Car only has 1200 miles. I stopped by the dealer, but of course it would not rattle then...

Anyone address this problem on their car? Thought I would check before I start tearing things apart...

Thanks!

found the rattle... being caused by the lower dash panel near your knees. A little weather stripping at the contact points took care of it...

man, i've had the same problem since i got mine in july! must be an 07 thing! i will look into that! thanks!

the extra weather stripping helped for a while, but it is back! The panel is flimsy lite-weight plastic that is secured by push-pin style connectors. I may try a couple of screws to hold it solid...

replace the plastic push connectors. use weatherstripping or backer rod to fill in the gap and it should go away and never come back.

I used these tricks on several iron chevies and have used it on my 07 gp as well.

I did take it to the dealer once. I bought the car new last october, it sat on the lot for almost 2 years! (so I got a great deal :)) Of course it did not rattle when I brought it in, so they were of no help. I decided it was easier to deal with it myself, than some hack who really does not care about it. My buddy is a 20+ year dealer mechanic, and says that they despise trying to diagnose "rattles".

Thanks for the tips.

True, the Monsoon does take care of many squeaks & rattles! Although I am pleased with the car (especially considering what I paid), Pontiac would have really had a great car here if they would have spent just a little more time on the interior. Oh well, it is the least of their worries now...

I'm right at 38k miles, you think a dealer would honor my warranty since i've had the rattle since i bought the car?

we have an '06 model and the dash rattles like you wouldn't believe. I've taken it off twice and to no avail it still rattles.

I used a single flat-head sheetmetal screw in the center of the "knee panel", running the screw straight up (via a pilot hole I drilled) into the metal brace/bracket just above the need panel (up towards the steering column). There is about a 1/4 or 3/8" gap between the plastic panel and the metal brace. I only ran the screw tight enough to put pressure on the plastic panel, and not so tight that it would warp the panel. Since the screw is down past your knees, it is out of sight (plus the black screw matches my black panel), and my rattle has been non-existent for several months!!!

Now if I can figure out the annoying rattle & squeak in my headliner / sunroof area...

pics? i'm still battling mine...grr, although i think mine is caused by the gauge cover on the top piece...

I originally thought mine was over the instrument cluster as well. Easy way to tell... When it is rattling, reach down and apply some pressure to the panel by your knees. If it stops rattling, you found it. Guy at the office has a 2006 with same problem.

it seems as though when it rattles and i touch the top part, it stops. i'm pretty sure its the top piece. when i tap on the bottom part, the top rattles as well, so i guess i will need to try to fix that somehow...

while diagnosing my rattles, I removed the dash piece on top of the instrument panel (pulls right off), and applied weather stripping material (I used pickup topper tape that was laying around) to the edges that looked to make contact with other plastic components, like the clear plastic instrument window, etc. Not sure if it did much since my primary rattle was the knee panel, but did not hurt!
