HPTuners question

vailskier3

just call me john-o
I'm looking to get HPTuners at some point this year. I don't know much about it yet. I have a couple questions...

1. Do you have to buy a scan gauge or OBDII scanner in order to use HPTuners?
2. I've read that it comes with 5 credits, is that one per vehicle? Or is that how many times you can retune your vehicle?

if there is already a thread about this, i apologize. i tried reading on the HPTuners website, but my questions were not answered by that.

with the suite.. you can READ and write and SCAN

so basically, you can read the PCM settings, scan your car to collect data, and WRITE new changes to the PCM settings.

the credits are used to unlock a vechicle/year combo.

hit their website to find out how many credits u need.

once u unlock that vehicle/yr you can tune as much as you want.

no. you have to register your fin. another car the same year as yours will not work on your credits. you would have to use more credits to tune that car. but once unlocked you can tune that car forever.

last i heard it takes 2 credits to tune our cars.

gotcha, that makes much more sense. ok, well, now i need to decide if i:
1. want to spend that much on a vcm suite
2. think it would be easier to just get overkilled
3. decide if i want to go through the poor customer service of overkill that i've heard so much about
and 4. wait for the 07 version to come out...

Heres how it works...

you can tune/unlock your car

or you can unlock every car with the same year and model

or you can unlock certain classes such as the GM Gen III V8.

They all take different amount of points.

so which one would you guys go with? i could maybe afford the HPTuners software like mid summer, but wouldn't be able to do any programming until like fall...

It comes with a scanner program, and comes with 8 credits. each vehicle is 2 cedits.

you can either tune per car.... or use all 8 credits and be able to tune any car of that same year.

I have the pro version. you can select beginner and go from there in the software which it will limit what you can and cannot change. so you dont go overboard and go into something you shouldnt.

IMHO, I'd buy the HPT pro.... it comes in handy and is a trade you can pick up on and charge people to tweak their cars.... so in other words if you get proficent enough you can make your money back.

ok, just bought an 05 pcm on ebay and i have decided to have someone else tune it. if i want to buy hptuners at a later time, i will, but right now i don't have the time to mess with it. now, trying to decide intense or wbs's pcm. all suggestions are welcome!
