pulling trans out of 01 grand prix gt

anyone here have any tips for pulling the trans out of a 01 grand prix gt... 3800 4T65E. so far i have the starter pulled bolts out of the flywheel axles out, knuckles off. electrical all disconnected shift linkage disconnected.... i'm sure all i have let to do is ubolt the trans from the subframe and take two bolts out of the housing from under the hood..... whats the best way to pull that trans out? cuz it looks like its not gonna come out of the bottom.... any help would be great! thanx

Stop! Do you have the engine supported somehow....???Cherry picker attatched to lift points is easy...2 pieces of wood 2*6's with 2*4 spacers and some hooks with chain....or rental places sometimes have the metal engine support bracket...Must support engine. Then you Must lower sub-frame. After that you should see what is going on....Where are you located?

i have the cherry picker ready for that.... but didn't think i needed it.... and i don't have an engine support bracket.... i just left the engine mounts in on the core support.... figured it would stay where it was... ?? would i be able to use a jack and a wooden board to support the engine from the bottom? or just hook the cherry picker up to the lift points with a chain? explain how the trans comes out.... does the whole engine and trans tilt to let it drop out or something... cuz from what i see is the engine can only move to one side a few inches before it hits the coolant resivoir... and i live in michigan 20 mins from howell.... if you know where that is. where are you located if you don't mind me asking... since you asked first lol.

no....what you need to do is hook your picker up, take ALL engine mounts off. You need to TOTALLY drop the subframe out of the car, which also means unbolt the rack and pinion and all your trans cooler lines from it. Then once your subframe is out of the way (also easiest way for suspension is drop your lower ball joints out instead of control arms off) you need to lower the engine and trans down and angle the trans toward the ground. At that point get a friend or two, and a trans jack or a jack and very skilled operator with something flat and thick on the pad. Support the trans weight, take your last bolts out, and get some pry bars and a buddy and start prying and shaking. It will just basically fall out at that point (just don't get caught under it, if it starts dropping, let the damn thing drop!) Then repeat process the other direction.

makes sense.... is there anything i have to disconnect from the engine.... like coolant hoses or anything important..... i already have the knuckes off btw.... and the trans lines disconnected..... cuz i need to get this done asap.... my truck just broke another u-joint and damaged the drive shaft and rear diff flange today.... btw i just need to replace a seal inbetween the trans and engine..... thinking its the main seal in there...

I'm in Anderson, IN...thought location was included in the avatar space...but anyway....why are you taking this out? cherry picker is what I use. I have one that has a locking arm on it. If no locking arm just raise and be careful...

I have info on complete teardown of this trans. I also do this for a living now....I was an operating engineer (crane operator) but no work in my area, we have a 3 year old and I can't live in a hotel anymore...so I am now rebuilding transmissions for a living...mostly I have been busy with 4x4's: 700R4 / 4L60 / 4L60E / 4L65E/THM 350/ transfer cases and rear end setups...since you asked....lol...

raise the engine and trans out...?? i thought it had to come out from the bottom?
btw jaysgtp360: i have the main seal in the trans leaking..... so i'm pretty sure. thats why i gotta pull it and get a new one put in. gonna be getting it pulled today, i hope... if i don't run into any problems....

no...just take the weight of the engine and hold it so it does not fall out the bottom when you remove the front sub-frame.
1. Hook cherry picker up to engine pick points provided by factory.
2. Start raising the picker so the chain is almost taught, just enough so the hooks do not fall out.
3. remove front tires and drivers side suspension and axle
4. put some jack stands or other supporting devices under the sub-frame and begin the unbolting process. (use a torch and pb blaster or some kind of metal penetrant).
I hope you have someone to call that is close cause I don't think you should attempt this if you were serious in your last post.

i have a guy coming to help me get it pulled out today.... hes done this before so i should be good. thanx for all your help.... i will let you know how it goes.

ok, the guy said its a one piece subframe and he is recommending to pull the engine out the top.... lol so now the engine is gonna be out tomorrow... disconnecting the power steering lines, and the last engine mount bolts, and it should be out...

I'm about to persue this undertaking without a car lift this time sounds like a taste of hell doing it on the ground! I hope it goes smoothly doing it to replace the pesky pressure control selenoid. All this for a $28 part! YAY!

ya, tell me about it.... all this for a 12 dollar seal.....

i had to replace the trans and motor in my car out of the top, it was fairly easy from my experience, about 2 months after i did everything i had the flywheel break on me on xmas day, the day after i had the motor out, flywheel changed, and reinstalled in about 1.5 hours all by my self with hand tools and a cherry picker. just make sure to disconnect everything before you rip the motor out, i forgot the low pressure PS line and snapped off the nipple.

not to be a prick, but hes a tard. Yea its a once piece subframe....support your engine, drop the whole subframe (did one on friday, took me 3 hours to swap a subframe in and out due to a wreck) then all you do is lower the engine at a angle and pull the trans out the bottom side. If you wanna make it hard on yourself be my guest, I'll i can do is tell you i've done more trans swaps on FWD cars then years you've been alive. So don't listen to advice and make it rough. I gave you an entire break down of EVERYTHING thats involved so if that doesn't do it for you i wouldn't recommend EVER working on your own car

wtf....no need to take engine out....that is way too much work....just drop the subframe in the front of the vehicle...there are many how to's...I have the collision manual for the grand prix I can email the pic. of the under carriage. I am looking now for a link to help you....

your both right.... lol i said screw the engine pulling.... did drop the subframe.... but got frusterated when i couldn't figure out how to get the trans out between the subframe and the body of the car...... so i said screw it.... putting it back together.... gonna just pay someone to do it when i get my tax money.... spending too much time on all this.... i had the trans unbolted from everything already.... just didn't wanna pry it away and not know how i was gonna get it out of there.... cuz the shock is in the way.... and so it just about everything in plain sight.... now i can't get the spindle back on the shock tower and the lower balljoint at the same time..... its really pissin me off now...

you need to take your strut out, and drop the engine down at a angle to allow you more room, and make sure you have the b1tch bolt out that goes in from the right side, right above where the axle slides in and WAY back in
