eh it would totally depend on the extent of the hail damage, and the condition of the rest of the car. any pics? generally you want to stay away from salvage title because it hurts you in the end, you could spend a fortune on fixing the car to make it perfect then later on if you want to sell it you will loose a lot of value.

Honestly id stay away from that or talk them down a bit i got my 98 gtp with a bit more mileage but no damage and clean title for $2000

id dont get everyones love for the car that comes with the l67 (GTP/GS/SSEI/etc). insurance is lower on an n/a car, all the parts are interchangeable, and you dont have the ****ty gear ratio that the HD transmission has (2.93s).

get a GT and swap it!

according to the insurance company my car is a 98 Grand Prix GT. for my year gtp was an option for the gt. my insurance is really cheap. i believe this changed in later years. plus with the 2.93s you get better gas mileage ;) how many people actually go through with the top swap that say they will? not to mention that in the end you will have spent more money and not have the good trans or any of the other things the gtp option gives you. tho you will have 5% more power i guess, tho you could probably make that up with the money saved.

i have a few questions for you:

a) why are 2.93s better when youre making a car fast? i still got 25mpg in my XGT.

b) how can you possibly spend more top swapping a GT than just buying a GTP? its literally impossible.

c) what is 'the good' transmission? i am extremely positive that my 'non-hd' transmission held up to more than enough power, even with 130k+ miles.

d) do you have any clue about what youre talking about?

a- didnt say they were better overall, just better for gas mileage :th_tongue2: edit: and probably mostly on the highway mileage.
b- i bought my gtp for about the same that the gt's were going for in my area. i didnt understand why i could get a gtp for about the same price but there are many examples i could show you even now.
c- im not saying the non-hd trans is bad, just that the hd trans is stronger. initially im sure its fine, start getting into mods more and it may become an issue.
d- no clue what im talking about, didnt you read this thread? im a retard who cant read :D

lol, im just trying to tell you that your thought process is a little twisted. you want those 3.29s for acceleration purposes and the only thing 'weaker' about the non-hd is the differential, which unless youre doing hard launches, burnouts, and taking hard corners then there should be no problems with it. i could break an hd transmission just as easily if i wanted to.

either way, id rather have the GT for insurance purposes.

all things to consider when someone is deciding between a gt and a gtp. its up to the buyer to decide what they are willing to do. i guess if you got a low mileage gt for cheap, were willing to do all the work involved in a top swap, and dont like launching your car or doing burnouts :th_nanana:, you may be better off than a higher mileage gtp all prices equal. i choose to jump right into the fun, and spend my time modding an already fast car instead of making one.

i liked the gearing is all. with a built transmission you can get whatever gear ratio you want (even 3.69s which i think would suck).

the next car i look for is probably going to have the l67 though since i wouldnt have to buy the top end for the car since its already there. that's saying IF i get back into these cars. they are just so cheap and easy. i could have a fast car that looks mega sexy time for like $6k. thats less than half the price my impreza cost me and its nothing to brag about.

dooo it!

ur knowledge of these cars have helped many folks out. maybe u'll get back into it and do something different. come on mr 24yr engineer....lolol p.s. u always need a back up car (even though the sub is very good/nice)

My prediction ever since he sold the car was that he would end up buying another green gp just like his and turbo it.

Personal experience, mine is exactly a 1998 GTP rebuilt with a salvaged title... basically first things first, replaced all the gaskets, and less than a month later kaboom, the motor blew. It's been a living hell of a car...
