hey guys. ive got a 02 gt. okay, i want to get a deeper sound for my car, like a deep rumble but not obnoxious or sounding stupid you know? but i dont want to spend 800 bucks on magnaflo, powerflo, ect.
is there an alternative to create this sound? mufflers? ive heard of people deleting resonators and putting a glasspac. help me out people! an suggestions are appreciated!
thankss

Funny, I saw this post since I was about to put one up on my exhaust experience with my 2001 SE 3.1 L with the single exhaust and single muffler. I wanted to convert to a dual exhaust on my 3.1 which almost no one does but I just had a feeling that there was much more performance in this motor. As a reference, I have owned a 1998 GP GT with the 3.8, a 2004 Impala with the 3.8 liter, and my dad currently has a buick LeSabre with a 3.8 liter. I did not want an obnoxious sounding duals just something with a nice rumble at idle and a moderate rumble on the highway but still allows comfortable conversation. Remember, I put this on a 3.1!

After much research and sound clip listening, I went with the GMPP exhaust for the W body cars and was shocked to find when it arrived that this exhaust is actually Magnaflows SS pipes and mufflers for the W bodied cars, specifically designed for the 3.8 motor, although it will fit the 3.1 as well.

GM PART # 12498617
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $630.00
OUR PRICE: $458.64

DESCRIPTION: W-body Exhaust Package For use on 1999-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo; 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala; 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. This replacement exhaust system is constructed with 409 stainless steel tubing and 304 polished stainless steel muffler and tips. Four Inch tips exit under the rear bumper and have adjustable depth to accommodate both stock bumper and ground effects kits. Exhaust adds a throaty rumble while still maintaining a palatable interior noise level. Cars not orginally equipped with dual exhaust will need the dual exhaust conversion kit 12498653 (sold seperately)

I would run, not walk, to buy this system at this price!!! I put this system on my SE 3.1 and eliminated the U bend after the converter when it was installed with a staright piece of 2.5 inch pipe. The wholes system is 2.5 inches which is MUCH bigger that the GT's OEM pipes and obviously my 3.1. The sound is NOT obnoxious and if you choice to leave the U Bend in the system it will be even more muted since that piece is VERY restrictive.

I was shocked at the power increase on my 3.1! As mentioned above, I have owned multiple 3.8 liter W bodied cars with all stock exhaust systems and my 3.1 with the U bend delete and the Magnaflow exhaust (GMPP, everything says Magnaflow on the parts) is more powerful now than the stock GT's and the other 3.8's I have owned with stock exhaust systems. The power increase over the stock 3.8's is not much but this out of a stock 3.1 motor!!! Mileage with this exhaust on the highway is 30-32!!!! I guess you have to wonder with anyone would buy a Honda Fit at 35 MPG.

Please check it out. The best exhaust deal out there!!!

+1, if you want it to sound good you will spend 800+, if you put a pair of borlas on it will sound decent, but still not totally awesome. Youtube grand prix exhaust and like borla or magnaflow and listen to some clips. If you delete the cat and/or res is sounds like a ricer honda....

I tried to post an extensive description before but for some reason, it was blocked. GMPP parts exhaust is actually Magnaflow for $450 for gmpartsdirect.com. Run to buy this exhaust at this price.

Check out GMPP exhaust, part # 12498617, which actually is a magnaflow for the w bodies, for about $450 at gmpartsdirect.com. Send me a message if you want to know my experience with putting this exhaust on a 2001 GP SE 3.1 motor-It is a major improvement!!

I wrote a very extensive writeup about this exhaust along with a picture of the exhaust system about 1/2 hour ago but the forum blocked my writeup because, I think, the picture from Gmpartsdirect.com-It is a Magnaflow exhaust for $450, all stainless steel, the same one Magnaflow sells under their name for $800, run to get this exhaust at this price. My 3.1 with this exhaust which is fairly muted, with a U bend delete after the cat, makes more power than my stock 3.8 did in my 1998 GT and 2004 Impala LS. Unbelieveable improvement! 30-32 MPG on the highway!

 that exhaust gave your 3.1L an extra 40+ hp huh? i will buy it then sir! Seriously, that exhaust gave you maybe 4-5hp dude, not 40. What is wrong with people these days. :th_wtf:

run a catless downpipe with the stock exhaust, all of your sound problems are solved. you put an 800$ exhaust into a 2000$ grand prix youre a fool, and its not even april yet

thats what i was thinking, i dont want to put 1/5 of what i paid for the car into an exhaust, i just need a way to make it sound a bit more aggressive than stock. thankks everyone

the 60 degree v6s sound better than 3800's anyway. I bet my mufflerless 3100 sounded just as good as that $450 exhaust.

joshsGT>> Leave your cat alone, just remove your resonator and go from there. Altering the exhaust is only going to make it sound better at idle. Any other RPM, blah!

alright. lets all try to get along now lol. i just want a good sound without breaking the bank. i appreciate all your suggestions, i kinda have an iidea on what i should do now. thanks everyone!

ive only heard 2 exhaust systems that sounded good to me. one was headers and cat with a cherrybomb glasspack and no mufflers. and the other was a built gtp with 3 inch exhaust and a res with no mufflers. here ill try to find a few that sound alright...

YouTube - Cammed Gtp 600/601 lift cam

YouTube - Ryan's 2000 Grand Prix GT without mufflers

YouTube - 99 Grand Prix GT Exhaust

DAMN!! the 3rd video is the sound i love. how much do you think that guy has wrapped up into it?
