Reason I ask is that I have tried various setups on past vehicles and its been hit or miss. What was a waste of time on 1 car was good on another. Last car was just basic cone on end of pipe. No heatshield, no fenderwell install. Just basic and worked fine. This time around I see no reason to do more work than needed for same amount of gain. I actually like the quiet of the car but will change if needed. Right now I am about to gut the airbox but I might also have some parts to put in a cone style filter by the front headlight. What I am curious about is if there are any numbers to back up claims and not just opinion cause that isn't always accurate. The cone right off the tb has me intrigued on wether its good not
 


i bet you $1000 that an open cone straight off the throttle body dynos the highest under all conditions.

it just may not be your best option if youre not at least mildly modded since it is essentially sucking hot engine bay air. an FWI pulls nice ambient air, but for what reason when the blower is going to heat it up anyway. flow > air temperature.

haha bio loves his open cones.
i got somewhat of a fwi, its like halfway into the fender. still gets cold air tho, fwi is usually what people go with.
if you have a supercharger you are going to love to hear it whine.
 
Will the whine be louder on an open cone or an FWI?
And with my topswap setup which will work better?
 


Id do open cone. The s/c would be louder open coned, since the noise isn't muffled in the fender.

Hmmm, maybe I'll just slap the cone filter on there then after the swap. Are there any cons to replacing the FWI with the open cone?

think of it this way...

Your fwi sucking in air only from the fender, through bends in piping with slightly colder temps, blower heats up air anyway.

OR

You run right off the throttle body, completely non-restrictive, no bends or anything, air getting pulled in is warm, blower heats up air anyway.
 
I keep seeing members on here trashing an intake because it has a bend in it. I have no idea where this notion came from; bends add a very, very minimal restriction, typically negligible in situations like an air intake on an automobile. It does have an impact on laminar flow, but that is also not an issue since the screen at the MAF sensor is there to sort it out regardless of bends or not.

You will have cooler air if you draw it from outside of the engine compartment. My IAT is almost always 5°F warmer than ambient. Yes, when I am into the throttle a lot, sitting in traffic for an extended period of time, etc. the intake will start taking on heat...but it is still cooler than air pulled directly from the engine compartment.

Think of it this way: there is a reason not a single car comes from the factor with a filter strapped directly to the MAF sensor/throttle body.
 
because its quieter and more economical? anyone that mods their car isnt looking for this anyway.

anyone to the point of a 3.4 setup or farther should severely look into running an open cone as youre losing power by being able to outflow your intake by having a smaller blower pulley on.
 


Hmm. Good points on both sides but still ,anyone have some numbers? Wouldn't cone strapped to the tb flow more air faster in same period of time than cone in fender? And at that rate wouldn't the air be moving and gone so fast that the difference in temp would be negligable? This is why I need some data. Although I think I am going to go open cone anyhow. You guys got me wanting to hear the whine now. If manufacturers did lots of things the way we wanted the cars would be great for us but they would loose sales to the customers who don't care about their car. That's why there isn't a intake/exhaust/ performance chip etc already in from factory. Unless you buy a vette or something then their is likely something to change
 
A couple of things I found in the past when testing out different types of intakes:

1. A cone off the TB will show higher temps while sitting, but as soon as you start moving the air temps will drop significantly, as much as 20* within seconds, and will equal the temps of a CAI.

2. The flow between a CAI with one bend and open cone off the TB showed significant gains for the open cone. The MAF increase was over 1000hz, and actually caused me to outflow an LQ4 85mm MAF (2.8 pulley installed).

3. MAP values increased an estimated 20kpa using open cone vs. CAI. I am unsure how much the actual increases were because I exceeded the 200kpa limits of the 2-bar MAP when I ran with the open cone. With CAI, the MAP never exceeded 190kpa, and averaged 180kpa.

I saw an increase in trap speeds of 2mph with open cone vs. CAI. To me, there was a clear advantage to more flow with open cone on a modified car. Whether there are any gains on a stock or lightly modified car is questionable.

Why do this Bio? Did you not monitor intake temps at all? an doesnt the iat send some kind of signal to affect the tune depending on temps or is it just strictly reading the temps just to read them?
