PLog vs Headers

rynoman03

I AM PEWPIN!
Ok I really want to do headers and plan on selling some stuff soon so i can afford them. But... I found a sweet deal on a PLOG for 75 shipped.

I realize I will not see the same gains out of a PLOG vs Headers but i also wonder how much more gains does headers have over a PLOG...?

Could some one please tell me their experiences. Or HP \ TQ gain differences between them.

Current Mods...

While I don't have HP numbers for you. The Plog is the next best thing to headers. As well..I wouldn't put on a rear plog/ported manifold. The difference between stock and ported is not enough to warrant the work. In the case of a W body that time/effort would be better used to swap the downpipe.

For $75-100 used, there's no real way to lose with a Plog unless you don't check it for cracks before bolting it on.

Ya i have the a Catless DP, Full Exhaust, and PEMS currently. I just got thinking though if i sold my DP i and a few other items i could afford the headers. Hmm...

i ran into the same situation about 4 months ago and ended up buying them... i'm already ready to switch to headers, in my opinion i would just say go for the headers

the concensus is:

if you want to go lower than a 3.4 EVER with your car, then just get headers.

$75 is not much of a deal on the Plog unless it is stainless and that is the only plog I could ever recommend anyone get. Mild steel, ceramic coated or not, cracks pretty fast. If you see one selling for cheap it may be some guy pawning off his cracked plog.

As with any mod you can't look at it in a vacuum and say it is the way to go. You need to evaluate where you are mod-wise now and what your ultimate plans are. The more mildly modded you are, the less gains you will see from headers over a plog or pems. I've tried giving this lecture to people in the community but no one really listens so do what you want. :th_laugh-lol2:

A little food for thought from Ron Vogel I have saved:
I was running a 2.8 pulley daily on my set-up with PEM's. At the track with nothing other than tuning changes to accommodate the headers, I picked up a little over a MPH through the traps, and no reduction in ET.

When I had PEM's I was running 13.10's at 105. The headers gave me the same ET initially, but I was traction limited. With DR's on the PEM's set-up it probably would have been possible for 12.90's.
That tells me you still are not seeing much gain from headers even on the verge of 12's. There are plenty of headers out now that are pretty much the price of a SS plog and DP. You get what you pay for with headers though. If you don't have the time or money to deal with trying to get them to fit and seal you will have to step up to some more costly options.

I just put on a rear PEM (FYI, don't bother as there really wasn't any difference when I examined them side by side). One thing I like about the setup is that everything fits correctly and there were no leaks when I first started it up. I had cheap headers on my last car and I'll never do that again.

I'm mild enough now that headers really won't help me much. And I figure if I need to seriously step up the power, it'll be with a turbo and headers would be useless anyway. I also like the nice low throttle power I still have with small primaries. There is your "against the grain" post.

x2. depends on your goals... you may not need to do headers if your not gonna mod too much. you havent told us your current mods or what your plans are with the car.

He has your basic 3.4" setup with a custom tune and a ported S/C and TB. SO he would benefit from headers...and since he has no knock now...might be able to get away with a even smaller pulley.

This is true... I would like to be a mid 13's car since it is my DD. But at any point i get another car I would like to be in the 12's with it. Right now i run consistent 14.1's and 14.2's but that is before i had the Ported Parts put on and cut he knock to 0*. I will be going to the track next weekto see what she runs.

Money as always is the biggest deciding factor. I've got a small amount saved for headers right now. About 80 bux. I could get the PLOG but I just can't bring myself to doing it now. :th_laugh-lol2:

You all are welcome to check out my sig to see the mods i have. Fquick is more updated then Car domain FWIW.

Thanks!
