My alarm is too sensitive. How to i fix it?

My vehicle is a 1999 Grand Prix GTP.

The alarm is much too sensitive, it goes off even if a moderately loud truck passes by. It only beeps three times and then stops. As far as i am aware it is the stock alarm system.

Is their any way to modify the sensitivity, if so how?

Any literature or any help with the topic would be greatly appreciated.
 


When I took apart my dash, 2000 GT, there was a sensor mounted under the driver's side dash. It was for the stock alarm and had a sensitivity dial. Looks like it required a small flat head screwdriver to adjust.

The sensor is small, about 2 x 2 x 3 inches. Remove the plastic shroud/cover under the dash, and maybe need to remove the metal cover too.

Hey thanks, ill have to go fishing around under the dash then for a while and see if i can find what yoru talking about.

Its a relief that its actually that easy and its a physical dial. I don't have to do some weird rain dance like when i had to program my new keyless remote. (key in, doers shut, door open, get out of car, run around car screaming, ac on button three times, trunk open button, sacrifice first born) JK.
 
I've adjusted my shock sensor before too. Be careful with it, take a little time to get it just right, at least it did mine...
 
Hey guys. went under there yesterday, fished around for a good 15 minuted and couldn't find it. I took the plastic off and shoved my head under there with a flashlight. I even took that small side panel on the left side of the dash and looked. I understand i am to be looking for a small sensor with a tiny dial on it that is turned with a screwdriver.

Can you be more specific where under the dash you found it?

It appears i have some aftermarket things under there, i have no idea what they do. For example i have a red on off switch that is at the end of the steering column on the right side. No idea what it does, i toggled it a few times. Not a kill switch, does not shut the alarm off.

I figured my alarm is stock because it works off of the original GM keyless entry device.

After i get a more specific location ill go under there again and check it out. If i cant find it ill get a camera under there and start snapping pictures if the unknown switches and modules.

Its pretty much right under the steering column area. You might have to take off the metal cover to see things a little better under there.
 
Still can't locate this thing.

A picture would help.

Is their a way i can just disable it till i go home to my dads shop? (even if i leave the car unlocked or only click the lock button once the alarm still engages after a while)

in the manual there is also a way to turn down the sensitivity its a series of pushing the lock an unlock buttons on the remote. not too bad i did it once

How is it that i always neglect to find the obvious simple solution... THANKS!!


Procedure to reduce alarm sensitivity:
-Shut all doors.
-Put key in ignition, do not turn it.
-Remove the mall PGM fuse in the glove.
-Turn the key one click toward you (it cant go any further toward you, i beleive this is called accessory mode)
-Turn your parking lights on. (turn the dile one click clockwise).
-Listen to the chimes (should be 4 for mode 4: normal sensitivity mode)
-Turn parking lights off
-Turn them back on (now you should hear one chime for mode 1: Reduced sensitivity mode){if you do not hear one chime cycle the lights from on to off till you do}
- Turn parking lights off
-Put the fuse back in
-Cycle the key to off.
