Fuel pump install.

Not sure if there is anoother one or not. But the questions about ''Where is the fuel door located at?'' and ''How hard is it to change the fuel pump'' are growing it seems. Hopefully it will help those that don't knopw how or need a quick reminder.



Alright. We will be installing a racetronics pump. Since there are not a LOT of people installing aftermarket pumps we will go over everything that pertains to the stock pump installation. If anyone needs the cupple additional details and steps that is required please let me know.



Things you will need-

Fuel pump quick disconects (get the round plastic ones)
Snap ring pliers (flat head screw driver worked fine for me)
Pliers
Fuel pump
Plastic fuel pump hose



Lets talk about safty real quick. Disconnect the battery. No smoking or trying to see in the dark with lighters. It's not worth you're car's life...or you'rs.


First off we will be working through the back seat. It is the best way for those who have access through the back seat.



Unscrew the nut caps and pry up on the cover to reveal the top of the fuel pump assembly.

Next unplug the two connectors that go on the pump assembly.The top of everything will be covered with dust and dirt. As with anything that involves moving parts you want to make sure it is clean when you are working with it. Especially with the fuel system.

So were going to brush and blow everything off. Should look like this when you're done.

Next were going to remove the snap ring. A screw driver worked fine for me.

This is where the quick disconects come in at. The tool is the grey thing and you push it into the fitting and it expands the clips that hold the hose onto the fitting.

Repeat for all three. The one in the middle is for the evap system. You simply push it together and it comes off. When you're done it should look like this.

STOP! You need to be cafefull when pulling the assembly out of the tank. There is a float and you need to use caution when removing it.

Start by pulling the assembly out of the tank and start watching for the float.

Take the clip out by depressing the two ends with pliers.

Do the same for the one under it.

Remove the sending unit and float assembly.

Here you can see the two clips that are on opposite sides of each other on the outer casing. You need to depress them both and slide the inner part out.

then disconect the pump harness and pull the old pump out. Also take the old pump out of the rubber outer casing and install that on the new pump. If you can't get it off simply make a slit down the side to ease the removal process.


The new pump is on the right with the old rubber casing installed.

Install the new filter on the new pump.

Install the pump into the inner casing.Then install the inner casing into the outer casing (fuel bucket) and push down and make sure you hear a click. Double check to make sure both the clips have locked into place.

Install the new fuel pickup tube and make sure it does not have any kinks and is not hitting anything. Then plug in the harness back inot the fuel pump.

Clean and inspect everything again and re-install into the tank.Also make sure you fill the fuel bucket up (there is a check valve so it will not drain out) and also make sure the tank is filled with at least 10 gallons. Let the pump sit for about 10 minutes before trying to prime it with the key on.

Yup you sure are. Everything should be the same for you in the write up. It's not specific to the racetronics pump though. You only have to do like 3 additional things though . Really easy. I'll help you with it if bending pin 85 out of the way does not work for you.
 
AND FYI it's actually in the trunk. Not under the back seat. Just to clarify.
 
Ok thats what i thought but my dad asked someone i guess an they told him id have to drop the tank. i was like i dont think so ill double check so thanks for clarification. If the pin doesnt work ill def be getting in touch with you an reading this even further in depth
 


If you look at the bottom of the plug you will see a small hole. Stick a small paper clip in there,push the wire in,then pull it out. Should come right out. What this does is release the clip wich then releases the connector from the plug.
 
Ok thanks tdc i got it. I called my dad an had him bring home the actual tool for it haha! Do it the easy way! now im just tryin to get it situated back in the tank right so that i can put the ring back in

Good write up TDC! I'll maybe putting a racetronix in my GTP here shortly, if I find out for sure my Black GTPs fuel pump is on its way out. I'll give the Black GTP my 30,000 mile GM Fuel pump assy and upgrade mine to a racetronix.
 
Its pretty esy job ironindian just make sure when you do it you clen off as much rust as you can. and clean up the area under the snapring once you get it off as well. i had a little trouble getting the pump to go all the way back in an then couldnt get the snap ring to fit. cleaned ut the rust under where it goes an put a little silicone on the big blue oring then it went right in
 
maybe a stupid question but how do you get the brown tube off the origanal pump? we been trying for weeks to seperate the line off, just been using robogrips and not trying to break anything so we gave up lol.
 
You cannot. No parts stores carry it. You will either have to use rubber line and compress the assembly to the exact height and connect the tube, or wbodystore carries the damn thing.

The tube has lots of excess length. If you are carefull you can reuse it but you would be better off just replacing the convulted tubing.
