does anyone on here know how to do fiberglass enclosures...i know how to make the frame, stretch the fabric...mainly what I'm looking for is how to apply it once I'm that far...
 


essentially, after doing what you've stated, you have to soak the fabric with fiberglass resin, then layer with the fiberglass mat. bondo work after that.

i'm sure someone else can fill in more detail or provide a walk through link....
 
Are you needing mixing ratio's and what not also, because there is not trick to it, just make sure your initial coating of resin to the fleece is as thick and soaked as much as possible. This will save time and effort because when you are sanding and get to a part where you sand down to bare fleece, well trust me it sux. It will also save you from having to put an extreme amount of fiberglass matt on for reinforcement.
 
I was mainly looking for the steps of laying the mat...like how many layers etc...I know that the more hardener i put in the faster it will dry etc...
 
well to much harderner and you will be burning something up, haha.

it depends on what the finished fiberglass will be holding/ what its main purpose is. what material will you be stretching over the frame? Also it depends a lil' on personal preference.

I like to get a thickness of at least 1/4" and no more than 1/2". I start with stretching a nice thick fleece material over the frame then slopping resin on until it is just extremely soaked, then when I flip it over I put on average about 3-5 layers of fiberglass matt to the backside of the frame, then I mix up a milkshake [body filler (no harderner), fiberglass chopped matt, and resin mixed w/ harderener] and go over all the backside of the frame.

Keep in mind that this is average, not overkill and not minimal for me, it will be different from whoever else you ask.

I hope Archemedes sees this thread and shares his opinion also. He might do it differently, but then again we do know a few of the same people, so he might do exactly the same as this.

I am pretty much the same, sometimes just a bit thicker in stress areas, but it's not like your standing on the thing.

I have watched Ultimate Whips many nights and they show you enough for a tease. I have plans to do a custom enclosure in the trunk and then move to the interior if successfull. So I'll be watching this thread. Thanks to the info already supplied and thanks in advance to future contributions on how to with this.

from what I understand ultimate whips only shows part of teh audio stuff as they have to send it out to be done right (on my car audio board one of the guys owns the shop that fixes their stuff and has pics of them when they come in)
 
I wondered that. I noticed some episodes their custom dashes and trim parts are shipped out too. I'd bet about half of what they do is subbed out to other companies/shops.

as for dash parts...they ship them out because there are companies that specialize in woodgraining stock dashes...anyone can send their dash to these companies
