Mounting subwoofer in cabin's trunk door.

I'll be trying this in a few days, just wanted to check if anyone did this before and have any tips on how to do it.

I'm going with a Rockford Fosgate P1S48, since it requires a small box. I was thinking of first triming off the carpet off the door in a 7" dia circle w/ knife. Then probably cutting out a rectangle in the back side plastic in the boxes mesurments (without cutting the carpet on reverse side.) This way I can mount the box flush with the inside of the plastic, with the carpeting over the front of the box. Then just bolt the box to the remaining plastic, and mount the woofer in the box through the front of the door. Probably will have to put weatherstripping on the sides of the door frame and wedge the door in to deal with vibration.

The idea is to keep the doors ability to open and close (revealing the amps) while having a sexy looking sub in it.

Any ideas?

Yeah.

The little door in the back bench seat that opens in twards the cabin from the trunk. idk cant be the only person to have this idea lol.

I'm not sure how well it will handle the vibrations with a sub attached. It's a small 8" 150w RMS SVC sub, so cant be that much.

I'll install it next wednesday, after I steal some particle board from work.
 


Mine rattles and there is no sub mounted on it. I had to wrap the little metal locking tap with foam tape. I say do it if you are going to put in rear bucket seats and make the pass through door solid. Acually that would be cool as hell!
 
I have a sealed sub mounted/visible in the rear pass-through.

Only the sub is visible when the pass-through door is open.

There is rubbing against the door when it is closed.

I am considering a couple of new designs, one being a down firing sealed box in the same location. Or building a High Output box like that of the manufacturer but with the wedge (of the box) and opening towards the front of the car.

Its a horrible idea! Why? Well let's see. You put a puny little 8" sub there and you are gonna lose any kind of bass that thing could produce. You are missing the point when you say it needs a small enclosure. If you think about it...........You are putting your little 8" sub in a HUGE OPEN TRUNK! NOT a small enclosure as recommended by the makers specs I am sure. You might as well put a tweeter in there cause that is about what its gonna sound like.

You are better off with going with a small enclosure and 2 8" subs if you want any kinda bass added to your sound. The way you are talking, you are just defeating the purpose.

Plain and simple.

box != infinite baffle

Anyway, I finished the box and just need to mount it to the door. It's been raining the past few days and I do not have a garage so it'll be awhile before that happens.

The trunk side of the door has these ridges in the plastic, and i've tried to dremel them out, but is taking forever. So after the rain stops I'm just going to get the angle grinder and zip that crap off so I have an even mounting area. Then I was thinking of reinforcing the area around the sub with wood splints so the plastic does not bend as easy, and then covering it all up with carpet.

PS: The sub sounds just fine sitting behind the door just like JayAz has his, except mines temp. wedged in between the metal frame and the floor with a rolled up sweatshirt. Sounds even better than my brothers two 12” kickers. Probably because it's inside the cabin so you can hear it, and not just sectioned off in the trunk shaking the hell out of the car. Only have the gain and punch at half with lowpass at 75. It gives a deep rich bass sound with my pioneer HU at 10 volume, at 27 you can feel it vibrate.

yeah the free air idea went out in the 90's , if you want a little boom and not take up alot of space do one of the pioneer shallow 12's box is the size of a briefcase , takes 1200 watts and the box is only 5 inches deep , and take the deck lid apart and take the little 4 inch speakers and let the sub breathe through and you will be surprised , works great for my jl 15w3
