So, on more than one occasion I've had people say we're stuck with the stock back brakes, and all that can be changed is the rotors and lines. So I figured it's about time someone documents proof that those people have no idea what they're talking about.

Does that rear caliper look stock to you? :D

What about the front one? That doesn't look like it came off of an F-Body. :p

Those look to be aluminum, correct? What modifications were required to get those calipers to work? Come on man, you got to give us more information, LOL.

Not vented either.

Grand Am rears always worked but that's a known mod. I hope it'd not that.
 


So, which brakes do I need to get for both front and back. 16-17#'s is quite a bit to save up front. I want these brakes, just tell me the model and year and Im makin a trip.

yeah they do look like GA calipers...

so you save weight, but no real increase in brake force, i dont think.

I don't know what streetwolf has up his sleeve. But I do know that Ron is running Grand Am brakes in the front, if not the back. Yes, he saves weight. But I don't think there is much improvement in stopping power. About the same as stock GP brakes I think. I know he said he hasn't had any problems with them. But I chose not to take off my stock brakes, and replace them with something equivalent only for weight savings. I want to be able to stop when I want to, so I will be upgrading to larger brakes.
 
I will, in a heart beat, switch out my brakes just to loose some weight and I wouldn't think twice about it. Ive never had any problem stopping and the GP brakes have never given me reason to question their performance. So while I wouldn't turn my nose to more braking force, I wouldnt do so either at a reduction in weight, even if that was all I got out of the deal.
 
2000+ Grand AMs, you need the calipers, rotor, and banjo bolts for the fronts.

The bracket is a direct fit with Grand Am bolts and sleeves, or you can drill/tap them for the GP bolts M14 by 1.0 pitch IIRC.

The backs use the same rotr and pads as the front, but you have to shave a bit off the back of the caliper to allow correct brake line adjustment. I have a write up on CGP.

I'd reccomend to get the brackets tapped, not use the sleeves... seems a number of people with the f-body brakes have experienced losening caliper bolts with the sleves... though i suppose it could be due to not using new loctite or similar....

Yes, they are Grand Am front and rear brakes, with cross drilled/slotted rotors, and stainless steel brake lines. As Ron already posted the sole purpose for doing this upgrade, yes upgrade, is for weight savings. They stop just as good as the stock brakes, and even better than stock with the stainless lines added, as to be expected.

By the way, for those that hadn't noticed. This is not my car, I run the F-body brake setup on the front and have something of my own in the works for rear rotors and calipers. :D
 
Upgrade?

These are known to be used as a RACE ONLY braking setup because the rotors are thinner than the GP rotors and will warp quicker than GP rotors.

Please someone post side by side pics of the front rotors with the view looking at the cooling fin areas so you can see the thickness of the surface area and cooling fins.
