Preferred Oil

I read somewhere a NYC taxi company did an experiment with oil and found the cheapest oil worked just a good as top of the line synthetic, just as long as it was kept filterd and changed.

Dean

As odd as it seems, taxi service is pretty easy on oil. It's always at temperature, no cold starts, etc.

I was running Amsoil from about 23K to 49K miles. I just switched to Valvoline Syntec 5w-30 with a KN oil filter. The amsoil with amsoil filter was going to run me $55 but the Syntec and KN filter was $25. Car seems to run just as good, it actually a little quieter at idle.

The main reason for the switch was because I was only going to get my moneys worth with Amsoil if I kept the oil in the car for 8,000miles, which I just have a problem with, no matter how good the oil is. It just better for my peace of mind to change the oil more often using the same amount of money and getting fresh oil in the car twice as often.

mobile 1, even though i recently heard its no longer fully synthetic. idk how true that is but i like the way my car runs on it, my friend says his sti runs terrible with mobile 1 so he uses castrol gtx

Mobil 1 is still full synthetic and still a pretty good one at that. But I have heard they now use a lower quality base compared to what they used to.

If you want to read up on oil from a bunch of oil nerds, then head on over to the bobistheoilguy forums => Bob Is The Oil Guy - Powered by Motor Oil

I am running 5w30 Royal Purple right now. It is looking good at 8k miles now and it's almost been a year since I put it in. I have a Mobil 1 oil filter (one of the better oil filters) along with a filter mag. In the next week or two I'll change it. I have a jug of 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum synthetic and another Mobil 1 filter ready to go. Really any decent synthetic will give you all benefits you'll likely get from synthetic oil so I don't see a need to get ripped on RP again. PP is solid stuff at a good price. If you run synthetic and change your oil every 3K you are just wasting money IMO. To get the most benefit from synthetic you want to run it for longer. Same goes for pricey oil filters. Later on I'll probably get Mobil 1 EP along with a good filter and I'll be good for 15K miles. Synthetic also gives better protection to higher temps which is of interest to those of us who like to push our motors.

Run what you feel comfortable with but to be honest, most people will have long sold their cars before they will reap the benefits of having run synthetic. :th_twocents:

That depends on what you call "synthetic", Going Too Phast. Most grades of Mobil1 are now using a Group III base, which many people, including me and most of the governments of the rest of the world, don't consider synthetic.

I have been using the Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic in our minivan, and have been pleased with that. Normally I like to run Mobil 1 but $12 for a 5 quart jug is a bit easier on the wallet than $26 for the M1.

Check it out..........................Don

RP is the sh*t!! they are one of the only oil CO. that said screw the government when they wanted the zinc additives in all oils out. which is good to have in the oil.

I was using the term within the context of the US for the layman. "Synthetic" in general is illusory anyway. Group III isn't the best, but for 99% of oil consumers it is going to give you essentially all the benefits you'll get, semantics aside.

Have fun rebuilding your motor.

Actually penzoil synthetic oil is some of the best bang for the buck when it comes to synthetic oil. (read about it on bob the oil guy forum)

I won't run Royal purple because it contains moly, which is comming found in greases. When used in high heat environments, the moly can become seperated from the rest of the oil and form into graphite which will cause engine damage. This is pretty common in diesel engine and some manufacturers (cummins if I recall) says not to use it.

I personally run Mobile 1 Extended Performance oil (full synthetic) with the extended blazer mobil 1 filter. I usually run 7,500 or so and then do an oil change. I've had oil analysis done by black labs and the oil is in great shape and they recommended going to 10k miles.

Amsoil is also an amazing oil/all their products and I wouldn't hesitate to use them. I use their trans fluid in my gtp which hopefully along with my diff squirter will protect my torsen diff.
