ok, here is the scenerio; my buddy is dropin an l67 in an early 90's lumina z34. everything is planned, ready to go back in and fit properly, wiring has been addressed and completed. the motor is still out of the car and he wants to throw about $1000 into it, and get the most power/performance for the money. We are not scared of cams or i/c either ;) I got a good idea of what i would do with the $1000, but would like to take other ppls ideas into consideration and relay this thread to him.

Please help me out here and list below what you would install, while on an engine stand, and the expected gains. Also; do you have a similar setup that you can vouche for saying-this is what i did and im impressed with it?

Thanks in advance guys, i appreciated all your help!!!!

$1000? do you want it to sound cool and go fast or do you want it to just go fast?

cam will be sweet and youll get a bunch of power out of it, but an intercooler will make more power than the cam alone.

^uhm....im sure he would rather it go fast than sound cool. the blower whine alone from the engine bay of a lumina is "cool sounding" enough to him im sure.

get an intercooler and run ~3.2 pulley on it from the get go. with headers and rockers you could easily run a 3.0 with decent timing. the intercooler is the best mod you can ever buy.

if it were me though, i would put a cam in it as you dont have to pull a bunch of crap to install an intercooler later. with a cam you have to disassemble a lot of stuff to do that with the motor in the car.

I'd say S1X cam, 3800 Meth Kit...so that is what...$600? Then drop the rest of it on cheap headers and a 3.1" :D

i vote for cam, headers. GEN V. this combo for me netted low 12s with no ic, I don't see many(any?) No cam cars running 12.3s so IMO, cam only makes more power than IC only.

Cam and ported blower. SSAC headers if they'll fit. Also I don't know if you'll have hood clearance for a IC?

LS6 springs, S1X and new stock timing chain... the corey combo.

i'd hold judgment on the stock timing chain until we tear the motor from the silver car apart.

I'd also like to see someone local go with an XP cam just to get some diversity, by all means it should work similar to my s1x as far as power gains.

What cam were you running.

X2, get the NIC cam and run a 3.0" pulley with a sweet tune. That would be a bad ass idle and when you stand on it you'll get noticed.

s1x cam
105 springs
cc retainers
stock chain and damp
viton valve seals
gaskets for swap
pacesetter headers/reworked ebay knockoffs
HAI
MPS with 3.2
smaller belt
NGK tr6 plugs
180 t-stat
TUNE

Great street manners, should still be able to use stock injectors.
That should blow about the whole budget if you can get some stuff used.

Or ditch the cam and 105 springs, get used 1.9 modified rockers, a used nitrous kit, and run a 3.4 pulley. This might be a little easier on the trans if you are only using the nitrous kit at the track and not spraying through the shifts.
Both setups have been proven power makers for years. Whats your goal for the car powerwise?

Meeeh...a 3.2" might be pushing it IMO...I still had a few *'s of KR with a 3.25" when I did my XP Cam.

I think it varies slightly from motor to motor. I had a 3.1 with my old XP setup and was running ~16* of timing knock free. Don't go that small unless you intend on getting bigger injectors, though. I learned that the hard way...

But, I def say go with a nice cam/included mods, some headers, and a good custom tune.

then youre running too much timing. ;)

depends how you want your car to act. do you want it to be slightly slow when not in boost or do you want it to drive like the car is on 'roids? then you pick timing or boost? i will be doing more towards the boost area. i want to run about 18* on the top end at most and just run more boost. i like being old school like that.
