RIP Pontiac

I recently read that as part of its restructuring, GM will drop the Pontiac line of cars. Has anybody else heard about this? Am I late to the party? Has this already been discussed? Or just cussed?

Personally, I think their whole problem has been marketing. Look what we had back in the day...

Chieftan
Bonneville
GTO
2+2
LeMans
Tempest
Firebird
Grand Prix

Ahhhh...

Now? We get G3, G5, G8.

What the hell is up with that?

Who is going to buy a car called G8? I don't care how great it is, they should have tried harder.

How can you hate the G8?!? I love the G8, it's a really cool car. The G8 is pretty much a mix of a grand prix and gto which is awesome.

i think he's saying the names for the cars suck.

what does the "G" even stand for? generation? absolute garbage in names plus the styling went south

yea...bad name, helluva car! they shoulda kept the grand prix name going and gm shoulda got rid of Saturn instead of pontiac!

Pontiac is no more. It's sad to see it go. I'm thinking I might be done with GM for good. Glad I did not pickup that G8 - almost thought about it.

I can't understand everyone saying they won't buy GM or that they regret buying GM. It's just a stupid badge, you can still buy the same car with a different badge on it! If it really bothers you, keep some Pontiac badges around and stick them on your next car, you'll never know the difference.

I agree, have you checked out the engine specs on the G8 GXP? Amazing.

Too bad its all for nothing! b/c Pontiac is officially no more. What a shame man. Oh and I hardly think that putting Pontiac badges on your next grandmas buick will convince you that it is a true pontiac

:th_laugh-lol3:Sure, because the Regal isn't a Grand Prix, the LaSabre isn't a Bonneville, etc. It's no like the 3800 is a Buick engine or anything... This is the kind of comment I would expect at ClubGP, not here.

Badge engineering at it's best.

Yeah and the Regal isn't just an impala either right? :th_laugh-pointup:I get it, the W bodies shared similar characteristics/drive trains; but the whole wider body/aggressive looking phenomenon was started by Pontiac a long time ago, way before the W body platform even existed for chevy, buick, and Pontiac to share. And I'm sorry the Grand Prix does have unique more sporty design cues and was unique in styling. It may be off of the same platform; but open your eyes there is a difference. (not to mention the huge similarity between the Century and the Regal of those model years) Its not like we are talking about the G5 and the cobalt, Acadia and Traverse, Trailblazer and Envoy, Colorado and Canyon, Torrent, Equinox etc. Those are obvious rebadges!!! I can't put a Pontiac badge on a current Impala and call it a Grand Prix; but you are right, I could put Pontiac badges on the Equinox and nobody would ever know haha.:th_sign-ohsnap:

:(Looks like GM is now owned by the government. You all know what that means. GENERAL MOTORS will become GREEN MOTORS. The government will decide/dictate what type of vehicle YOU will drive. By eliminating PONTIAC they have taken the excitement out driving. All GM vehicles will be GREEN appropiate only. No performance allowed. This philosopy will apply to the other divisions of GM.
:D I never thought I would be saying this, being a GM vehicle owner for over 40 years, I may have to turn to FORD MOTORS for a performance vehicle. I liked the way FORD handled the bailout situation. :th_thumbsup-wink:A thumbs up to the FORD for giving the thumbs down to the GOVERNMENT'S bailout offer. Looks like CHRYSLER will be owned by the UAW. If the UAW is anything like the IAM union I belong to heaven help CHRYSLER.

:th_depressed:With in a few years we will all be driving GREEN YUGOS

I AM THRU RANTING NOW

This might very well be true. General Motors is becoming Obama Motors. Just wait - they'll kill the Camaro after a year. I'll keep my grand prix for another year - after that I'll likely go for a Mazda Speed 6 or Accord Coup. GM (or more like OM) will just be boring Malibu hybreds within a year.

i will say ford has really been getting it right lately, they are moving forward in the industry definitely.... all their new cars and trucks are great, even the ones that are not performance oriented

saturns gone, and pretty soon we'll either have the chevy Lumina SS(EWWW) as the old pontiac G8... or the Chevy G8.
