The Old and The New, Blower Motor Resistor

After replacing my blower motor resistor, I can see why the OEM ones are so prone to failure. I took some comparison pics so you can see what I mean. I had to superglue the old one back together because I had to break it in order to get it out.

The Old Blower Motor Resistor:

The new one appears much better build to deal with and dissipate heat. So Im hoping I dont have to get back under there any time soon. I had been a long time without fan speed #5. Finally, due to the ignition switch, I lost other speeds as well so I just knocked them both out and replaced them both. Its good to have all my fan speeds again.

it's kinda funny that you lost 5 first, then the rest... thats backwards!
 
Yeah, which is why I lived with it so long. I never could get a clear answer as to why that happened that way. Most loose 1-4 and 5 still works. But blessed me, I got the weirdo.

mine lost 1-4, like normal... went a few months with just 5...then nada, nothing at all.


replaced the resistor, and all good all around.... odd
 
If it werent so blasted hard to get to I would buy another one and do some experiments to find out how that all comes about, but I aint getting back under that dash and fighting with that thing right now.

actually, looking at the schematics, it's pretty easy to see how these different scenarios could occur.

Now thats certainly odd because I see the 4 fuses on the old pack, but not on the new one. There were a couple external devices on the new one (one of them you can see at the top of the pack) and I didnt pay them much attention but I thought perhaps they were diodes to prevent reverse voltage as the motor engaged but I guess they could just as easily be fuses as well. If they are fuses, there certainly was not 4 of them on there.
