Dog bone flip?

Okay, I was out the other night and was talkin to some guys bout the GP...He said he had one before and he did a dog bone flip..He was trying to explain to me what it helped and everything! He was SOO drunk I really couldn't tell you what he was trying to say!!! Has anyone EVER heard of this and if so whats the purpose?! Would it be to make your engine more stable...:th_scratchhead::th_scratchhead:
 


he's talking about flipping the rubber bushing in the mount, so the solid part is forward and back instead of top and bottom. It helps to limit the amount of travel. It's pretty common, and not hard to do, you just spray oil on them, tighten down the nut and bolt, and use 2 wrenches to spin them 90 degrees.
 
O okay, well again he was drunk and I was trying really hard to understand but o lord!! lol. Thanks! I will have to try this! Is it somthing you would do just as a basic little mod?
 
Yeah, it's pretty basic, just something people do to try to control the engine movement a little without getting the vibration of poly mounts.

I do it just as Scimmia described, by removing the torque strut (dogbone) from in between the part pictured above and the engine brackets just to get it completely out of the way. Then with the bracket still attached to the car, put the bolt back through the bushing and tighten down the nut completely. Then I take a flat screwdriver and pry the rubber bushing back just enough to spray some lubricant in behind it all the way around. A little WD-40 works good. Then I put a 15mm wrench on the bolt head and another on the nut that I just put back through the rubber bushing and begin pushing the two wrenches towards the engine. Turn them slowly to make sure you are not tearing the bushing and sometimes you have to work them back and forth a little bit to get the entire bushing to "flip" 90 degrees. Once finished, the bushing is now solid on the front and back which is where the engine puts the most force against them as it tries to move back and forth. Then just take the nut off and remove the bolt, reinstall your dogbones, and you're done.

its that easy to turn with some grease?? god i tried to take them out one time with NO SUCCESS!!! pried at them, tried to hammer them out, NOTHING. all i needed was some dang grease... ehh

i used wd-40. i smashed the bushing in a vise and turned the mount. did both of them in like 5 minutes.
 
Okay, Thanks guys! Im going to try to do this! Well..when it warms up! It went from 77 at 4pm to now 6:30 and its 52 and we are now in a freeze warning for tonight! LOL
 
ok now talk me outta this idea. instead of having a rubber peace at all, why not weld a peace of flat stock to this and drill a hole for the bolt.:th_scratchhead:
 
sure, if you like your teeth rattling at every stoplight.

In reality, I don't think the vibrations are that bad, I've ridden in one car with poly mounts. This is an alternative to poly mounts, which every vendor sells, to stiffen it up without giving you the extra vibration.
 


i have poly mounts and my car doesnt really shake. you can tell they are there, but it's nothing crazy.
 
When u remove the section of the dogbone do u have to hold the engine up or anything? Or does the motor stay where it is?
 
The motor will rock forward a bit, but it's easily pushed back enough by hand to reinstall the doggie.

Do it one at a time...spray a bunch of WD40 on it and let it sit for a minute, put the bolt back through without the dogbone in it and put your wrench and socket on it and keep turning it back and forth until it spins 90*...put the dogbone back down and VIOLA! Now do it to the other one...if that clears it up for you guys...and no, the motor will be fine...its even ok without the dogbones attached, just dont drive it like that ;)

haha yeah i accidently started my car with them un attached with the remote start button in my pocket :th_lipssealed2: and the motor was dancing in the engine bay like a extacy junkie at a techno club!
 
Could I ditch one of the mounts? Has anyone noticed the LS4 only has 1 dogbone setup in the front? Or is the 3800 just too wild?

LS1tech.com is where I found out about this mod. The LS4 guys rave over it for their engine.
 
JW why you would want to? It is there to prevent it from moving...and a modded L67 puts out way more TQ than a LS4...IMO.
 
I'm just curious why they got rid of one. Stock vs Stock the LS4 is more powerful. They weren't intending on this car to be modified beyond stock, at least not much. Did GM simply realize that one was sufficient enough?
