Congress at its best.(take it the way you want)

Ohio Congresswoman Betty Sutton has introduced a new bill to provide a voucher of up to $5,000 in exchange for your clunker. To be eligible for the voucher, car buyers would have to purchase a new vehicle that is more fuel efficient than the car or truck it replaces. The trade-in also needs to be at least eight years old, while the replacement vehicle needs to sticker for less than $35,000.

The bill will include purchases of both foreign and domestic autos, but there is an incentive to buy vehicles assembled in North America. If the bill passes, foreign-made vehicles will receive a voucher of $4,000, while North American-made vehicles will be eligible for the entire $5,000.

Sutton is hailing her bill as a win for all, saying the legislation will "help consumers, stimulate our economy, improve our environment, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and help our domestic auto and related industries." Not surprisingly, domestic automakers are smitten with the idea of vehicle vouchers. General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner said the legislation would be a "big help," while Ford called the idea a "win-win" for the auto industry and the environment.

Ehh they have been doing this at my local stealerships for awhile, they offered a much higher trade in rate that others and when you bought their new car they would scrap your old one so there was one less "old" car on the road. I see trucks driving to the scrap yard at the end of the week with gems that get scrapped :(

Either way I don't think it will help reasons?

1.) Most people don't have that kind of cash right now and 5k isn't enough for them to spend on a brand new vehicle when they have to spend under 35,000$
2.) "Made in America" is a relative term, most "foreign" auto makers build their cars here already and stimulate the economy.
3.)Ford says it's a "win-win" but they have stakes in other car manufacturers and they aren't going anywhere + it's Ford so you can't trust them :th_nanana:

This will be another failed attempt at a stimulus plan, BUT that being said at least they are trying something and I hope it works (I actually don't because the more money you print then borrow the more my $ goes up :th_laugh-lol2:)

I just think the government should send everyone a real stimulas check make it at least 5 grand a person. Not on a you spend money on a new car and get 5g just send me a check and guess what i will spend that check and so will everyone else so that is a big jump start for the economy. Tahh Dahh. I figured out the problem our congress people dont know how too. Send us Americans some freaking money instead of taking it all.

Well here is the problem, there are people out there who believe it or not do not spend their money. They will put it away and never ever spend it, so it doesn't make its way back into the economy. Plus they might think "why send money to criminals?" since there are criminals out there. Of course if they gave me 5k+ I would spend that in one day easily, what they need to do is just spend crazily on giving people jobs and let the banks and companies sink already.

Honestly I don't believe that the Auto companies should be saved, yeah that means goodbye GM but I could care less. They dug themselves into that hole, and Ford would be left :th_nervous: They should let the banks and auto's fall already and just build and hire and build and hire. And pay people to do things and just not sit on their asses throwing money to HUGE corporations who don't need it, they are just broke on paper in reality they have tons and tons of money. These pay caps they are suggesting and implementing are pure bulls#it. They won't do anything if you cap "XXX"'s salary from the $650,000 they made last year to a $300,000. They should be paying simple hard working people more and just leave those people to fall already. Seriously starting to piss me off.

Redistribution of wealth...brilliant. :th_shakinghead1:

I just dont know i just hope something happens soon. I work at a used car dealer ship and we are slow and its even a buy here pay here place. People just dont have any money around my parts here. we are pretty much all automotive based around here and everyone is laying off or closing up. Its tight. Somethings gotta give. Even the Factory that makes Honda car panels is down to 3days.

The problem with this idea is that it wouldn't raise anybody's spending power. It would just raise the prices of goods and devalue the currency.
