Gears won't shift

Hello,

So i started my car today, it started normally. When shifting my gears, the knob moves but nothing happens. My car stays in park. It seems that the shifter is a little more loose than normal. So i can move it to reverse or drive, but it does nothing.

Does anyone know what this is? It is a 2004 grand prix GT2 3800- bought it new back then in 2004. It has only 130K miles.

Check at the trans 1st its easier. Mine was broke there before and had the same symptoms as yours.

Be advised if your cable is broke you still have to take the console appart to swap it

I took the console off. Are there any pictures of what the linkage looks like under the hood?

That seems to be the issue. Now im a novice. Is this something a professional should do? How long does it take to fix?

It's a deffinate dyi. If I can do it you can..trust me lol.
Linkage is under the brake booster driver side. A little hard to get to.
There is a mid point that I believe you can take it apart so if it's broke at the trans side you don't have to pull it through the firewall.
Like scottydog said you can zip tie it to the linkage to get you by.
I got mine from the junk yard few bucks
Hope this helps you
