"Tuned for X deg adv at WOT"...what's that mean?

When someone says, "I've tuned for X degrees spark advance at WOT," do they mean maximum advance they see under WOT, or minimum?

In other words, are they saying:

"I'm doing X degrees just as I get into WOT (although it may tail off as RPM goes up)"; or,

"At no point in a WOT run, even near the upshift, am I less than X degrees."

They usually say they can get 20 degrees of timing without seeing any kr or somehting like that. I think stock commands 16? degrees of timing at wot? But bumping up your timing is always free horsepower unless it creates knock. At cruising speeds you see a lot more timing, by increasing it even further, you can get some mpg out of this.

A lot of people are in the argument of whether to run more boost until you knock and pull timing at wot or whether to run less boost and increasing timing at wot for more power. The more this argument comes up the more I'm a believer in more timing and less boost. Both ways have made good power though.

Here is a timing table from my tuner.

Spark advance is just as it sounds. It's relative to the position of the crankshaft and piston with the piston being at TDC (top dead center) within the cylinder. You're actually starting the ignition process before the piston reaches the top, and therefore you're able to make the combustion stroke more efficient when driving the piston down.

I think what the OP is asking is: If I say I'm running 18* of timing, is that the highest WOT timing value or the lowest WOT value?

I'll use the picture Parker posted:

Where he has his WOT values circled, would we consider him to be running 13* or 16*? Or, do we say he's running 15*, since that is close to the average timing at WOT?

i would say 16*, since that is his max WOT value.

and parker, seriously, why are you running stock timing? you should be in the 20s, homie.

Me and brian both got to 26* on the 2.8. :th_nanana:

And I know I have it labled wrong but this was actually my street tune. I was still seeing around 22* @ WOT with the numbers you see above.

Right that is what he was asking. And the answer would be the highest.

Typically the number you see will be the number you are running. But there are other factors that you have to consider that advance the timing. Like i said I was seeing right at 22* of timing and looking at the table you don't see any numbers higher than 19.

Yeah, that's right. I know what timing is, I just wanted to know exactly what people were "bragging on" :th_laugh-lol2:

TDCRacing,

How the hell are you seeing 0.80 and 0.92 g/cyl airmass columns in your timing table?
With my PowrTuner, the highest I see is 680 mg/cyl (i.e., 0.68 g/cyl).

In hp tuners there are three other tables that add timing:

Spark Correction
AFR
IAT
ECT

If you zero these out, then you get whats in the table that was pictured earlier, but if they aren't(which I'd put money yours aren't) then you get the 22* commanded when it only says 16...... With the add tables, stock timing goes up to 20* in some instances:th_king-normal:

Another reason why I love HPT :p

Yup that's right.
