got a used alternator after mine quit working id like to clean it up and maybe even paint it. Whats the best way to do that without hurting it or taking it apart thanks

with a brush. theres a plastic cap on the back that comes off with a few clips, mask of the pulley and brush on high heat paint, cause the alt gets scalding hot. caliper paint will work fine.

you'll want to wire brush with brake cleaner on a rag and some prep spray first, then mask and paint it.

I can't get the plastic cover off I feel like its about to break

mine has like 4 or 5 clips that went into the body, used a pick to pry em back then lift on it till you get the next one free, keep popping em and holding the cover up so they dont slip back in and lock.
