05 Grand Prix GTP : Boat with fake supercharger??????

5am

New member
So I just got this grand prix gtp with 140k miles on it .

The engine seems to run fine and stuff but im trying to determine exactly how bad this thing needs new shocks and struts, it feels like a boat and has weird sideways body roll when going over certain bumps is this thing supposed to handle nice and tight or is it normal for it to feel like a boat?

Also apparently this car has a 3.8L supercharged V6 but I wouldn't be able to tell honestly . Is there something wrong with this car or no.

Thanks

It's a fat FWD sedan.

You can tighten up the suspension with better shocks/sways/mounts/springs, etc...but it's still going to plow corners.

As for the supercharger...I mean it's a mid to high 14 second car on it's best day, stock. It's not the fastest thing on the planet by today's standards. Put a cone filter on the MAF sensor and you'll be able to hear the supercharger. They're pretty quiet, stock.

Open the hood. The engine cover will say atleast supercharged on it. Series 3 supercharged I think is what they say. If there’s no engine cover it’s not exactly hard to find the supercharger. It’ll probably be the first thing you see.

At 140k it's probably looking ready for new suspension even if it's been done on time previously.

The sideways roll on bumps could be a bent rear trailing arm.

wtf is the deal with getting these cheap ass full strut/coil assembly pairs for 18inch wheels ? Seems hard to find.

Then these on amazon , it says they fit an 05 GTP but then it doesn't mention anything about wheel size . Im thinking they probably don't actually fit my car .

How are you guys buying a pair of strut/coil assemblies for the same price as 1 assembly , like I see on PartsGeek they have the assemblies I need but only single units for $120-150. Even then they only have rears no fronts for 18"

Lol why would you even get 18's for this car anyways all it does is reduce low end torqe I wish this car just had 16s on it

the 2005 gtp came stock with 17's, if I remember right. 18's aren't much bigger. the only reason they wouldn't work is if you have a wheel that's too wide.

It's just poor definitions using wheel size.

18" should be GXP only struts.

If you have 16" wheels you likely don't have the sport suspension etc.

I thought they were 16s. And the GXPs were 17s.

-Edit- Wow I guess I never really payed enough attention to the 7th gens.

haha yeah you're right then the number on my tires indicates they are 17's . first i used a tape measure , i don't know where the fk your supposed to measure from because not even measuring rubber to rubber the diameter looked like 19 or more .

You can't. It's the diameter of the inside bead behind the lip. Which is why it's on every tire sidewall.

So literally any shock will fit as long as it's not "FE4", or "GXP", or "18" wheel only". (Which are all the same)

seems to get pretty bad gas mileage along with not seeming to roll as well as a car should. maybe it needs an alignment. hard to tell im not that smart. tires don't make any funny noise though .

untechnically speaking , my previous car (Subaru svx ) just seemed to want to roll or move easier , its not because of weight difference they are both about 3500lbs. maybe its how the transmission is geared . hard to tell if wheel bearings need to be replaced . the display does keep showing (service ABS ) and (service traction control). I think the dealership I bought it from needs to pay me some money back lol.

buying used cars is honestly pretty annoying , you need to notice everything wrong right away and then have a rough idea of how much it costs to fix each then be good at haggling . You need to drive something around for maybe a whole day or two to make a good decision, but cant .

I'd never buy a car with those obvious issues; but that's just me.

99% of the time it needs a hub assembly because you can't just replace the sensor in it. That'll usually fix the service light issue there.

Otherwise if the car feels "gutless", it probably needs LIM gaskets, has a vacuum leak, or the converter is starting to clog (all common issues). It should be much faster than any SVX.

It could just need a basic tune up, and the maf cleaned as far as the performance loss and bad gas mileage. I would do all new fluids, oil, trans, coolant ect, plugs, wires, and fuel filter. My 01 ran like a dog when I first got it, until I changed out the fuel filter.

Huh alright.

And yeah if im keeping this thing im definitely going to replace the cat and mufflers because you can tell the engine sounds pretty sick.

This is my first car with OBD2 , be easier to look at all the sensors and computer stuff , I ordered one of those Bluetooth obd2 things .
