Transmission overheating

Hello guys. So while driving in town I notice my transmission fluid jumps from 79 degrees and will go as high as 196 in as little as 30 minutes but it doesn't happen all the time. I have read suggestions to add a coolant line or turn on the AC. What should I do? I have a 2004 GP gt no turbo.
 


I am a new car owner but this temperature worries me. I'm taking my car to the shop tomorrow and I will run the coolant idea by them. I also know the fans aren't cutting on until it hits 200. How have you guys overcome that problem?
 
What problem?

That is how most cars are all designed.

95% of cars made run a coolant temp of 190-210 depending on model from the factory, they all try to run the same-ish transmission temp and oil temps. Both of those around 200, one for long fluid/oil life and two to help burn off condensation that builds up on the motor/transmission.

Tranny cooler is your only fix, or do regular fluid changes. In the summer, I see temps of 205-215 within 20-30 minutes of driving on the freeway.

Cooler isn't needed at those temps. Cooler than 180-195 isn't good for the trans either. Lower than that.. you aren't warming up enough.
 
The problem for me is the temp just keeps climbing. To get to 220* after 60 minutes of driving, and 30 minutes of that was hi speed freeway driving, is ridiculous. One day I will take a long drive and see how bad it gets. When I wheeled My Bronco, some trips were 12-14 hours of driving, and that tranny never went over 200*, and it worked 3x as hard as this little GP tranny.
 
220+ is a bit high...

Some of these transmissions run in the 180's all day long on abusive highway runs. If you have one of those.. you smile and enjoy it.
 
i hate to even say this, but my tranny started to run hot, 225 on short trips, and then it let go on me. being it locked up, it got replaced.
 
My stock trans with a cooler got to 240+ on several "normal driving" occasions. It let go at 80k...Granted 80k it was 11 years old. New trans with a...probably too big trans-cooler and oversized zzp radiator never gets above 195.

I would consider 220 normal for these in stock form.

I agree, and that is so wrong for a transmission to go through this as "normal".
