Terminology for mods, aftermarket, and replacement factory parts

Does grand prix fourm have correct terminology for this? I assumed anything that is changed from factory is a modification? I keep hearing that exhaust, intake, pulley, tune, porting, plugs, and ect. is not a modification. Only when you change internal on the engine is considered a modification. I am just looking to use the correct terminology.
 


if you install headers and a 3.4 pulley with a tune, your lightly modded. its still no race car. ;) but its something you will feel for sure in the seat of your pants.
 
if you feel. 3.4 and headers is the most common mods done.

if your talking your sig, just list what ya got. no explanations needed here, we all know whats what.

Whoever said that is a friggin moron and doesn't know what the definition of MODIFICATION is. An intake, even though the gains are minimal, is a modification. When you change the downpipe, you have modified what was there, so it is a, you guessed it, modification.

I wouldn't really consider plugs a modification, they are more like maintenance.

If the care doesn't come that when from the factory then it is modified.

That can go both ways though. It doesn't really offer any clarification on the matter.

I say no, those are replacement parts.

-On the other hand my car came with a cam in it, is an aftermarket cam not a modification?
I say Yes, it significantly changes the vehicle.
 
Anything that is added to increase performance or reliability that is not the original design/material of the factory part is a modification.

Of course, if you add factory available options to a car that didn't originally come with them, that is also a mod, just in a different sense and for different reasons.

It's all according to what you've done to your car to make it better for you.

You're right I over simplified it. Tires axels lugs I agree those are replacement parts/maintenance.

Drivetrain type changes I would call modifications even going with a colder spark plug. Putting a k&n panel filter no, but replacing the intake box with a cone filter setup yes.

I'd consider a k&n panel filter a mod...even though it won't do anything appreciable in terms of go fast, it'll make maintenance more cost effective due to being reusable.

Other filters aren't reusable, which put them in the regular maintenance category.

You have to give the term "modification" a set definition in order to use it, it can't be a set of opinions from everyone else on what is and isn't modding.

My definition is: If it changes the function, performance, durability or ease of maintenance of the car, it can be called a modification, because it is changing an aspect of the car to be different than it was originally, to better suit the needs or wants of the owner.

Other people may have different ways of looking at it, but it's all opinion.

Decide for yourself. :)
