Main trim painting

I'm thinking about painting the main trim piece that goes around the gauges and down to the hvac controls. I was going to match the color of the car and add a little something to the interior to offset the dull dark gray. Now this piece is smooth, but slightly textured. Is lightly sanding it recommended before applying primer? And what primer/paint is better to use for the plastic trim? I don't often do anything to my cars other than general maintenance, so I apologize if this is too easy lol. Thanks for the input
 


its kinda tacky looking is why no replys. theres guys who have done interior painting and if your a ricer type kid you like it, if not, clearly you dont, its up you in the end, you own the car.

black carbon fiber wrap did look pretty good tho. someone here did the dash trim. on the wheel the part around radio buttons as well as the window switches. and maybe some on the console around the shiftier iirc, its been a while.
 
I could see how it would give off a "ricer" look. Maybe as long as I keep the color somewhat subtle, and not a loud color. If I do it there's no turning back lol. That's what makes it a tough decision.
 
if its worn out looking you can buy trim paint thats a damn close match. i painted my steering wheel and air bag, but did it with the same color.

its a year old now and still holding up damn good. looks so much better then it did the leather was worn off at the top of the wheel and the foam around the radio switches was roached out good, air bag was also a gummy mess.

I second the vinyl wrap, it's not permanent and looks much better.

If you want something to cover scratches and messed up texture on things like kicker panels and door trim, stuff that gets kicked or hit often and sees more wear and tear than stuff like the console and dash, you could try rubberized undercoating. Rustoleum rubberized undercoating isn't lumpy and stands up pretty well to high abrasion... It also works well as interior sound deadening in a can. Spray it on the underside of the roof, under the liner, inside doors, etc.

If you're dead set on sanding and painting, there's some kits that include patterned stencils to make a carbon fiber look, and you can clear coat with either satin or gloss to get whatever texture you want. I haven't tried it myself, but I've seen results that look bad, and results that look bad ass. ;)

I did mine white to match the color of my car as well but I hated the results. I went outn hit a junkyard just to grab another one and that gettin metallic black as well as the center console..
 
Make sure you wash it really good to get any old ArmorAll or what have you off of it first. Use some simple green followed by dawn dish soap. I would also scuff it up a little bit, if you still plan on painting it, with a green scotchbrite pad. Then do a final rub down with some paint thinner/surface prep.

I originally did mine in silver to match the exterior of my car, and I too hated it. I sanded it back down and went with a nice gloss black. So I think the metallic black would look pretty good.
I tried finding the old pics, but apparently imageshack deleted them all.....

Hmm...I know it's personal preference, but hearing you guys say you hated it concerns me. As for the green...heck no lol. I don't know, maybe I'll just leave it be. I like cheap little custom things since I'm poor lol, but don't want to do something and have it be ugly. Maybe I'll go to the junkyard, pull a trim piece, paint it, and see what it looks like. That way I don't ruin my original one.

I like the look of the pillars bein the same color and maybe the vents but just the small lil detail pieces....i put that white dash in and that **** kicked me like karate lol I still have the white one on because I havnt painted the new one yet only primed it up so far..been workin on those body pieces and only hate 2 hands to push that lil button on top of the spraycan lol
