Cooling fans only come on with ac

Engine temp ran up to 2 notches from red in stop and go traffic one day. As an experiment I parked car and let idle, same thing, checked fans, neither one on. Turned AC on and both come on cooling car right down to about 180. Figuring it's the engine temp sensor, any thoughts? Could it be one of the 3 fan relays? Thanks for any advice!

FYI- get an OEM GM sensor for it. The ones at the parts stores seems to have a high failure rate, and some are even bad out of the box. Might be $10 more at the dealer but worth it in the end. I went through 2 "new" sensors before I finally went to a dealer and got a GM one. After that the temp readings were where they should be.

I agree, price range 7 to 15 bucks, went with AC Delco($15) from RockAuto.com

Gonna keep AC on til it arrives and we'll see what happens, thanks for input!
