Low fuel warning light

Just wondering...what triggers the low fuel indication light on the dash? Is it based off the position of the needle on the gauge, or the amount in the tank? I'm assuming they work together, and when the gauge is reading say, 2 gallons, that's when the light comes on. Just curious because if my gas gauge isn't working and the light comes on based off of the level in the tank instead of the position of the needle, I wouldn't have to track my miles

It is based off of the sending unit in the tank. It sends a signal to the cluster to let it know how much is in the tank.

I'm not sure what year you have. If you have an access in the trunk sometimes you can clean off the electrical contact to get it working. see pic below.
