Replaced fuel sender now fuel leak.

I just spent the better part of 3 hours ripping apart two grand prixs to make one functional gas gauge. The rubber o ring was an absolute nightmare trying to keep up when placing the fuel pump back in. I just went to fill the car and it was hemorrhaging gas from above the tank. I know I am going to have to take this apart again, are there any secrets to keeping the o ring at the top of the pump? I was thinking of just using RTV.

Also, any harm in driving the car like this until I get it below half a tank?

I wouldn't drive a car with leaking fuel... only takes 1 asshole with a lit cigarette or something else and...... Are you dropping the tank from the bottom of the car or are you going through the trunk to the fuel pump access cover? (Assuming this is a 97-03, don't know if 04+ have the access in the trunk) Either way, the complete fuel module should close tightly to the tank with the rubber O-ring sitting in place properly. You should not need RTV to hold the o-ring secure. Should be grooves to properly secure it with. I am going by memory here since I have not done a w-body fuel pump in a while. Make sure the retainer c-clip is installed properly also as this will cause a leak if it isn't.

lube the o ring with Vaseline or grease, then install it and the pump. they tend to fall off and push through if not lubed up.

Pulled the entire assembly apart only to find a pinched O ring. I bought a new replacement at Advanced Auto and spent the better part of 2 hours and a can of vasoline trying to get it to seal. My friend that is a mechanic had it seated in 20 minutes. The new O ring was impossibly difficult to compress.
