Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

It's finally out! Weeks of unbolting, unhooking, and unclipping and fifteen minutes to actually lift it out.

Went super smooth. Still need to pull the hydroboost, brake pedal, mufflers and cats, then the truck can go away. Unless there's anything else I should grab? ABS module? IPC? Any trim pieces?

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

Got it moved to the garage. I'm a little concerned that only five of the six flexplate bolts were still there, and of those five, only one was actually tight. Two of them were bent. There was some minor carnage behind the flexplate to the oil pan. Safe to assume that's from the one loose bolt bouncing around in there. That would also explain why the flywheel inspection cover looks like a rat chewed on it. Also, one of the back cover bolts backed out. That will all get taken care of when I do the lower conversion gasket set.

Either way, that setup wan't going to last too long the way it was.

Hardware store tomorrow for the engine stand bolts.

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

It's up on the stand. Glad I went for the bigger one... Next step is to remove all the superfluous junk. After that, getting it to run on the stand!

Did you scan the PCM for old codes before you yanked it? Might give you an idea of where to start if it has troubles...

I didn't. Truck had been sitting for 6+ months without a battery, so I didn't bother. It started and ran without knocking and that was good enough for me. So far as I can tell, the only issue this truck had was the loose torque converter bolts. I can only imagine what it sounded like when that loose bolt was bouncing around back there.

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

at the drag strip a couple weeks ago, the first race I won (not that it matters) was against a chevelle with a LQ4 swapped in. I'm not sure what went wrong with his car, but he should have beaten me by at least a second.

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

Pulled some junk off the block. Not much though. More importantly... I sold the donor truck today.

After doing some math; Cost for engine (with harness and PCM), transmission, T-case, and other miscellaneous junk... About $500. I'm okay with that.

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

I missed out on a 4l60e for $125 bucks yesterday. Would of giving me a grand total for motor and trans of $325. I guess I will keep looking. I take it you are keeping the truck intake since you are putting this in you Suburban? I'm on the lookout for a good deal on a ls6 intake with injectors, rails and TB.

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

I would love to have a V8 rwd project car/truck, but with the two FWD/AWD I already have, my driveway is full. Lol

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

500 for that entire drivetrain? Damn sweet deal, I would say. Lol

I'll be honest, I feel really good about it.

I'll probably stick with the truck intake. Odds are, hood clearance won't be an issue on whatever jalopy it ends up in. Originally, this engine was destined for my '84 K10, but after further consideration this 6.0L/80e combo is going into a toy. There is sooo much power potential there, it seems like a waste to put it in the truck. That old 4x4 will never be "fast". I just need to find a decent 5.3/60e dropout for that thing.

A real car guy finds room. :th_laugh-lol2:

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

Truth be told, the HOA forced my hand. Got a letter saying can't have two trucks parked in the back yard. At first I got all self righteous, thinking "you can't tell me what I can't have in my back yard." Then I realized having a junk/part out truck in the back yard isn't a battle worth fighting. So I dropped the price and let her go. I'm sure I'll have bigger issues in the future.

In other news, I bought some fresh oil and a new filter in preparation of it's upcoming stand run.

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's out!

We all want to see and hear it.

Run it nice and loud, lol

It's close. Yesterday I got my remote starter button, and fuel rail adapter.

I'll have to borrow the battery out of the '84. Fuel can is supposed to be here Monday. That's the final piece. Should be making vroom vroom noises early next week! The neighbors are gonna love me.

those neighbors who are going to love you are probably the ones who snitched to the HOA. make them pay for their sniveling.

Ha! Not likely. I know most of the neighbors personally. They're all pretty cool. Our HOA actually has a board member drive around and visually inspect the neighborhood. My letter came straight from the top.
