how to wire aftermarket 6x9 speakers to stock connedtions

I recenlty purchased R1693 6x9 speakers for my 1996 Grand Prix. On the Rockford Fosgate speakers there are only two terminals and the stock speakers there are 4. I hooked them up two different ways. 1st I hooked up one set of wire and there was just bass no vocals. Then i tied both sets of wires together and got vocals but not much bass like I did before when I only had one set of wires plugged in. Is there another way to wire them?
 


I assume you have the monsoon or equiv option. I would not tie the sets together as they are coming from two different amplifiers and you WILL blow one or both.

The only option you have is to directly wire one set to the tweeter and the other to the woofer. One set is high frequency only, the other low only.

I've never worked on or with the monsoon option, but to my understanding this is how it works.

Higher end 6X9's such as infinity kappa's already have separate terminals for woofer and tweeter. However those are now rated 2 ohm nominal so that would kind of worry me with the factory amp.
 
ok thanks i will look into that. I have a new CDE 102 alpine deck just installed. hooked up to it i have an R500-1 Rockford amp with 2 10" sony xplod subs. could i possibly use that amp to power the 6X9's? my guess is no.

other wise could i just hook up the 6X9's to the factory bass wires and hook the high's(tweeter) wires to a pair of new tweeters? would that work. i have never installed tweeters before though. i would probably mount them on in the rear window on the side some where
 
brookg : if you don't mind modifying theres no reason you cannot use the tweeter wires to power the mids\tweeters on the 6x9's.
Chances are, if you look under them by where you hook up, you'll see a second set of wires going to the terminals that are black and red. this is what you would need to cut and hook to. These 2 leads go to the mids\tweeters. this will 100% fix your problem. I assume your speakers look like this on the back

the two silver go to the woofer, the red and black to the tweeter\mid. Simply cut the red and black off of the terminals and wire directly to them.

i get what you are saying! thanks for your help. yeah the stupid setup is really annoying! i will try this and see how it works and i will let you know.

any more advice you can give me? like... do you know what are the positive and negative wires. i think the one that has the stripe of white running on it is negative, am i correct?
 


i would not recommend using the amp powering your subs on the speakers IF THEY ARE HOOKED TO BOTH SUBS AND SPEAKERS. by not recommend, i mean DON'T DO IT
 
I did exactly the same thing and the 6x9 subs and tweeter/mids (wired seperately, using the factory amp) sounded great. All of the sudden I lost both rear tweeters/mids. It acts like a fuse or something blew in the high frequency circuit. Any suggestions what happened? Your advice would be greatly appreciated because I'm stumped.
 
That wouldnt be a fuse, that would be your amp channel or the tweet/mids have popped. But usually when tweets go, they don't just stop working, they start sounding like someone dragging chains on cement.
 
I paid big $’s for the Monsoon upgrade in my ’06 Grand Prix GXP. It was a huge mistake! As I kept blowing speakers all around, I decided to upgrade all the speakers with aftermarket but it was a challenge to find 2 ohm and 3 ohm speakers that would fit. Finally, I did it! I’m a true audiophile and the sound is HUGE.

The solution is simple. I used Infinity Reference all around; in the dash, the doors, and even in the rear deck. I bought two 9602ix 6”x9”, two 6502ix 6 ½”, three 3002cfx 3 1/2”, and two 075tx 3/4” tweeters. I shopped, bought online, and paid less than $375 for everything.

Everything fit and I kept all the factory harnesses intact. I simply clipped the leads from the crappy, stock, paper speakers and connected them directly to the Infinity’s.

The only challenge was the rear deck but it turned out to be fairly simple. I took my Dremel and cut the enclosure part off the X bracket that held the 3” crappy mid woofers and mounted the Infinity 3002cfx directly to the arms of the modified X bracket. I had plenty of clearance, since I didn’t mount the 6”x9”s to the plastic, snap-in, speaker bracket like the stock ones. Instead, I literally just dropped the 6”x9” speakers right into the cutout in the back deck. Then I snapped the factory speaker bracket on top of the speaker, making a super tight mount without any fasteners. I connected the low pass to the 9602ix’s and the high pass to the 3002cfx’s.

Done! I know I lost a lot of the frequency response from all of the speakers because of the Monsoon amp/crossover but it was relatively inexpensive and an easy installation. The sound I have is nearly competition. I hope this helps everyone trying to do the same.

You're a true audiophile yet think 6x9s sound good and seem to think paper cones are automatically crappy not to mention several other things I find sad. A "true audiophile" would know some of, if not most of the best speakers in the world use paper cones. They also typically cannot stand automotive sound quality due to a number of reasons and usually do not bother with it.

I just did exactly as you did. Front 6 1/2's sound great. The rear 6x9 sound ok with bass at 0. If i turn up the volume or increase the bass all kinds of distortion on low bass notes. Any suggestions?

I couldn't get the tight, rich bass with the 6x9's out of the rear so I eventually added a 3-channel amp for the rear low pass and a dual-coil 12" Fosgate sub enclosed in a custom box in the right rear of the trunk, tucked in behind the wheel well. Of course, if you go this route, be sure to bypass the monsoon amp with the rear, low pass into the aftermarket amp. I won't use words like "competition" or "audiophile" around here because these people get pissed but it sounds great. Bass sits at 2 and treble at -1. Check to be sure your low pass isn't out of phase. I had no distortion.
