• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

I know this is not the right site to be asking

I know this is not the right site to be asking but do any of you guys have any experience with 98 2.2 s10 pickups. I signed up for the s10 forums and I hardly ever get a helpful response or any response at all from every post I've ever put on there. So it's almost useless to me. On the other hand every question I ask you guys some one especially Scotty Doggs (which I thank him a lot) will try to help me. I'm having an issue with my s10 that's confusing me. I won't say what the issue is until you guys tell me it's ok to ask. I thought it wouldn't hurt to just ask. Again thanks guys for all the advice I've gotten for my Grand Prix.

Ok man thanks. I have a 98 s10 2.2 5 speed. Every now and then when I would start the truck the battery would drag a little when starting. On the times it would drag the security light would stay on but all I had to do was turn it off and start it again and it would go away. It didn't happen a lot. Now 2 weeks ago I got in it and turned the switch and all the lights shine bright and the radio comes on but the truck wouldn't turn over not even a click from the starter. I reached under the dash and turned the cluch relay about a half turn and it started just fine. I drove it a whole week and it did it again but this time it wouldn't start no matter what I did to the relay so I cut the wires on the plug and bypassed the relay. It run and started good except the starter dragging a little some times for 5 days and now it's doing it again. Bright lights radio comes on but will not turn over and start. The security light is not on so I don't think that's it. I pulled the battery out and put it in my blazer to check it and it fires up first turn every time so it's not the battery either. I tried to tap the starter a few times with a hammer to see if might have been stuck but that didn't do anything. Do you guys think that the cluch relay might have messed up the starter with all the dragging or what else can cause this?

what do you mean dragging alt, like the pulley is not smooth turning? time for a new alt then.

the starter could just be old, and the Bendix gear or shaft maybe worn out. maybe you can grease it some to help it slide in and out better.

the clutch safety switch maybe bad? should be a button that gets pushed clutch in that lets the power go to the starter from the key.

id find that, and play with it some. reinstalling what ever relay you bypassed. unless your dealt with that part as a whole. i dont know exactly what your dealing with under the dash.

maybe,

the starter could be taking a huge draw to crank it over. or the battery cables are getting crispy. they dont last forever.

and gm alts are known to not make peek charging power at idle, you raise the rpms and the volt gauge goes up.

I bypassed the clutch safety all together because that is what was causing it to do this the first time. It was worn out an all it did was not let the truck start unless the clutch was pressed in. It started fine after that except for the dragging like the battery was weak. Like I said before I took out the battery and put it in my blazer to check it and it fires up first turn of the key every time so the battery is not the issue. I started trying to get the starter out of it this past weekend to take it and have it tested and it's so damn tight in there I can't get it out. There's not enough room to get it out so sometime in the next day or 2 I'm going to have to take the motor mount loose and jack the engine up about and inch and a half just to get enough room to slide the stupid thing out. What happen to the good old days when everything was right out in the open and easy to remove parts? I swear anything made past the early 90's is a pain in the butt to work on.

lol that made it sound so easy. I did everything he said even took the exhaust loose. that thing is not coming out unless I can get another inch or so of clearance. my buddy is a mechanic down the road and I had him to look at it to see if there was maybe something I was missing and he couldn't get it out either. that's when we decided the engine would have to be raised a little. a lot of work for what should be a fairly easy repair.

the problem was the starter and the reason I couldn't get it out was who ever changed it before put a starter that's almost an inch longer than the new one I bought. I'm not sure what the old starter came off of or how they managed to get in in there.
