Which would you buy an 08 grand prix gxp with 60k miles or an 09 g8 gt with 169k mile

I have a large enough downpayment to get either one of these cars . The 08 grand prix gxp has pretty low miles at 60k and they want 13k for it. There is also an 09 g8 gt for sale in my area for 12k with 169k miles. The g8 gt is at like one of those small side dealers and the gxp is at a major dealer.I was able to look the g8 history up in carfax. Seems like it had regular oil changes etc. The gp gxp on the other hand had very little history and has only had 1 owner. I'm kinda leaning towards the g8 even though it has much higher miles. If I could talk them down price what do you think would be a fair offer?

Rwd > fwd

But I would expect to have to do maintenance repairs on the g8 so I would factory that into the cost and I wanna say 08 was the last year of the g8.

I looked the g8 gt history agin . It only had 2 owners. the first owner put 152,000 miles in 4 years . Is that normal?lol Second owner only owned it for a year and half.

No but maybe he commutes for work etc. I wouldn't personally buy one with that kind of mileage unless it was real cheap and if I was buying it with every intention to fix what's needed.

For some 35-40k a year is just a normal commute for working or daily driving. I know plenty of people that drive 50k a year for a job, but they do have a pretty nice job though.

The major dealership is charging too much in my eyes for the grand prix, maybe 11-12k max for a quality low mileage unit but even still that's a steep price for a 8 year old car.

G8's hold their value more because they are only made for 2 years (08-09) but with that mileage you maybe at the point of semi major repair work on that L76 motor. If you can see all the history, see if the AFM/DoD lifters have been replaced at one point under a warranty or something. Thats really my only worry with that engine, otherwise it's basically as strong as any other LS motor. The transmission is known to be really strong but I'd really test drive it hard with those miles. They are known to have shift flare issues in alot of G8's and the higher mileage ins't helping that 6L80e out.

Id day both prices are very high . Look in the used market from an owner not dealer, if you can afford it you can save a lot and find something with less mileage.

Man, if i were you i would get a new style impala for a little more money.

If i had about a couple extra grand i would sell my g6, get a couple grand loan, and get one of the newer impalas

169000? Hopefully the cam has been swapped out. Or the DoD lifters have been replaced with the new model lifter. Otherwise, I'd be concerned about having a DoD lifter failuer. I have had one go bad in my G8 GT and it started eating a cam lobe. Ive since swapped it out for an aftermarket cam and LS7 lifters. Oh... The GP GXP has the same DoD lifter issues.

The transmissions (6L80E) are pretty decent. You wont break it unless your tuner is cluseless. The 4T65E is JUNK (as we all know... LOL). Especially behind the LS4 (well... beside.. LOL). The one youre looking at is an 09 so it shouldnt have a flare issue. A tune will wake that trans up BIG TIME. I tune mine myself and it will knock your teeth out on WOT shifts. Intake, headers and exhaust are MANDATORY! LOL! The L76 (outside of the DoD lifter issues) is STILL an LS motor. Rock solid motor. LS2 bottom end and LS3 heads. Cam it and wooo hooo.

I own both a GP GTP and a G8 GT so I can speak on both platforms with a lil experience. In my opinion, the G8 GT drives MUCH better. And oh yeah, RWD > FWD. And the G8 is faster stock.

Just my opinion...

I agree the new Imps are pretty classy looking. I think they pack the new LT1 v8 and RWD. I will admit I dont know much about them but they have wifi lol

I been eyeing them since they came out. this last winter i almost pulled the trigger. i just dont like having any sort of loans on a car. only if i had about 3-5K more cash and i could let my g6 go and get one. they just look mean.

The GXP is way overpriced. The G8 def has high miles. With those miles, I would assume much of that is highway which is not as bad. I would see if you can negotiate with the dealer on each and see how low you can get them and then decide. I would be leery of financing the G8 though. While it should have plenty of life left, you could be stuck making payments and having a decent size repair pop up.

I would also be interested in seeing what the finance rates are for each. I bet that smaller dealer is likely to have pretty high interest rates. In the end, the difference in interest rates can make a significant difference in the final price you end up paying over time for it.

Side note to derail the thread, but the new impala only has a 4 cylinder and 3.6 V6 option. No V8 and rwd with that platform.

The 4 door Chevy SS has a 6.2 V8 with rwd though.

Private sale G8 GTs with 100-ishK only book for around 12k... but I see now you bought the GXP. :P

I wish there was a new V8 Impala, maybe when the SS gets axed... that would be sweet.

ss sedan engine is not same direct injected engine as the lt1 in the 6th gen camaro or c7 vette.

as others said the chevy ss sedan and the impala are entirely different cars.
