1999 Grand Prix Factory Stereo Questions

I have a 1999 Grand Prix that doesn't appear to have the Bose or Monsoon stereo. The factory CD/radio says Delco on the nameplate. When I purchased the car, only one speaker had audio coming out of it (the front drivers speaker), however every so often at least one of the rear speakers (maybe more) starts to work, but eventually stops after the car is shut off and restarted. Does this car have a factory amp anywhere and if so, where is it? Also, how many speakers doesn't this car have? I noticed there are tweeters and mid ranges mounted in the doors and possibly two 6x9 speakers in the rear deck, six total speakers, is that correct? Are there factory HPFs or crossovers?

Two front door speakers, two rear 6x9's and the tweeters.

I think only the bose has the mini amp under/behind the glove box. Monsoon was 04+ cars if I remember right.
 
I have no idea, I don't mess with audio stuff in cars.

I know a few other people on here have better audio knowledge, maybe they will provide more information.
 
You should just have the stereo and speakers as mentioned above. If a speaker(s) works intermittently, I would look at the stereo as the culprit, but you could also test the speaker when it isn't working.
 


i had one out 100% and two that worked as they saw fit. speakers were wasted, no foam left around the cone to frame on any of them, how any sound came out idk.

chances are your speakers are 15 years old and dead too. i put 4 new speakers in and it sounds like a new stereo now.

5 1/2 round for the front doors, 6x9's in the rear.

Thank you for the reply. I took the factory stereo out and tried to test the speakers individually with a donor CD player powered by a stand alone 12v battery and the only speaker who talked to me was the driver front and it was very quiet and fuzzy. I didn't get any feedback from any of the other speakers, nor did the tweeters work, which leads me to believe that maybe there is an internal amp or crossover which needs power for the speakers to operate and possibly a fault with it. I figured the stock stereo wasn't the culprit after that test. I'm certainly not saying the speakers aren't toast, but I'm leaning towards multiple issues and malfunctions that I need to address.

On these 6-speaker systems, does the factory stereo direct the frequencies via built-in crossovers or is it possible that there is another device between the factory stereo and the speakers which directs the sound to the correct speaker.

To my knowledge, there are no other devices. They most likely have capacitor style crossovers in the wiring.
