Geriatric mods

Help me eliminate things I despise on my FWD GPs, please. They are 99s.

Already figured out how to turn off headlights in daytime, unplug DRL module.

Unplugged the speaker in the MALL module's case to silence the chime.

Posting this then going to car and make fogs work with brights. Meanwhile...

How can I retain all other functions and:

Make headights not care about parking brake?

Make headlights on / off not be affected but light sensor?

Make shifter not affect door locks?

Make brake not affect shifter?

Has anyone done a conversion to manual heater controls? If so, what fan switch did you use?

Thanks for reading. You don't get old by being stupid. But my cars are loaded with bloatwares for lack of a better term. I can fix all this with old school components but what is the GPF way? Thanks again.

"Make headlights on / off not be affected by light sensor?"

That sentence should read as above, woops. Brights and fogs is definitely better and nobody seems to mind.

Still looking for ways to defeat these naggy features without swapping the headlight switch and shifter with different, aftermarket or retro components.

Maybe nobody has wanted these things before me, maybe these are silly questions. I'll figure things out eventually.

About the shifter and door locks. When I first got my car, every time I shifted out of park, the doors would lock. I hated it so much. I found a way in the owners manual that turns that feature off. It involves removing the MALL Program fuse. And then doing something with the lock switch. Let me see if I can find it.

This is very very easy. I did this on the wife's 03 GT and just did it again 3 days ago on her 02 GTP. Let me get the info. give me a few.

Here's the procedure.

With the key in the car in the Off position, pull the MALL PGM fuse. Then turn the car to the Accessory position. You will hear it chime up to four times depending on your cars content (features and such). Once you hear those initial chimes, you are now ready for programming.

If you want to disable the auto-lock feature, press the lock switch on the door. Count the number of chimes you hear. That is important. You then want to keep hitting the lock switch until you hear ONLY 1 CHIME. Then you are in mode 1 which is the disable of the auto-lock feature. You are now done.

To exit the programming mode, turn the key back to the Off position. Re-install the MALL PGM use in the correct place.

Start your car and move out of park. The doors should stay unlocked.

As far as the brake affecting the shifter, I think the only way to override this is by removing the little solenoid that lets the shifter move. Take the shift column apart (I know you know how to do that) and hit the brake. You should see a little arm move.

Ok. go to radio shack and buy this 271-1317. 5 come in a pack but all you'll need is one. Bend the wire or prong or whatever it's called like the picture below. You can use pliers to close up the loops on the resistor for easier fit.

1. Pop out the oval piece that holds the security light and ambient light sensor.
2. unplug the light ambient sensor.
3. Put the resistor in the plug on the harness. make sure it's snug.
4. No need to cover the resistor with anything so just stuff the harness under the dash.
5. Leave the ambient light sensor on so you don't have a hole in the dash.
6. Put the oval piece back into dash and ENJOY!

Sorry I don't have pics of installation but if you want to take pics and make a write-up to help others, go for it.

Aha. I remember messing with the alarm settings on the GT but didn't know you could defeat the auto lock feature that way. My bad memory, and I have the manual. I'll need to plug my chime speaker back in to do this. That spot where the MALL module is at must be where you're supposed to install an aftermarket alarm thats less retardo. I'd really just like to use a key to unlock it and have power locks like 70s junk. Thank you very much for the instructions, I appreciate it.

I think in my dash write-up this is called a dealy bobber. Which thingamajig on the dillybobber, the middle one? I never did get all that crammed back in my GT right but I know the one that likes to fall apart lets the A/C get cold. Theres a Radio Shack up the street but getting there during work hours might be a problem for a week now. But this answer is what I was looking for. I never have much luck with search terms here because old lol. So thanks.

No problem. I didn't know that aftermarket alarms hook into that spot. I guess if you don't need to reprogram your cars features, it's a good place to plug in to.

I'm just thinking that all the wiring you'd need goes to that spot already so yeah it might be a convenient location to put an aftermarket alarm. Would love to see how far I could throw that little black MALL box. It reminds me of those doorbells that play a hundred songs... WHY? One day I'll snag a Painless hot rod harness or just make my own, and then I can pitch the OE wiring over the fence, too. Or not, car ain't worth working on that much so I'll seek the lazy workarounds first and see if thats enough to please me.

If you do decide to rig your own wiring, you should take and pics and stuff so if other people want to do that they can see how :th_thumbsup-wink:.

I'll say this... when I tore down the 40th GTP... I had all the time, wherewithal, and tools to remove all the wiring intact. But did not. Fell short on inclination. The insanity level of the design went too high at the firewall so I ended up chopping pigtails and scrapping the car with some wiring still in the dash area. So even given all the chances in the world, a youthful and sane person might never get all the old wiring out and remain sane and young. That being said... hell yeah you know I will if I do. I'd call it "stop the madness". Should be easy enough, just lay a 69 Firebird harness in it, hook everything up that I want to keep, and chunk the rest. I envision this using like a Fiero swap or dune buggy / sand rail / rock crawler PCM connecting to power where a distributor would be on an old car.

I took the unplug option in the vid, for auto on. Thanks again, BB! I've had the GTP two years and have concentrated on making it work like its supposed to. Like I did with the GT for 4 before it got KO-ed. Anyway maybe this is the year I start making them act like I want them to. Its about time.

Liking my car better already. Thanks for the help guys. I guess next thing is to pull the console bezel and see what evil I can unhook there. Fn cold even in the garage though, whew.

I'm gonna try unplugging the MALL module next (theres two plugs) and see what that gets me. Watch and laugh.

Between being able to get help here and somebody elsewhere posting this song... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9uZOCEl7v0

... I'm in a good enough mood for this to happen just now-

So its all about getting help when its needed, even if its just a little boost to get you over the hump. The van croaked at the light, as they turned right. Not so geriatric I can't offer assistance. Yet, lol.
