Downshifting an automatic trans

if you already have the gear in first, then the tranny dont have to downshift. when your buddy nailed it he was probably in 3rd gear and the tranny had to switch down to second then down to first, thus taking longer to take off. if your roll racing an auto you have to hit it a little before the third honk or your gonna get left while the tranny is downshifting. if you go ahead and put it in gear, it doesent have to downshift. BUT at the same time, if your buddy had nailed it a little before the last honk and his tranny ALSO was in first and dident have to downshift, it would be a close race.

go to the drag strip. run the car in manual, then run it in drive. you will get the same time. ive done it myself, and most of the time i ran slower in manual mode. even if you drop it in one or let the tranny do it itself, its still the same gear, no matter what.

long story short. you won the race because he was waiting for his tranny to down shift.

but theres ways around that, i have no problem roll racing, you just gotta know to hit the gas a little early so the tranny can start downshifting, no biggie.

FTW means for the win

go back and do a 10 roll with your buddy. you can put it in first if you want. at 10mph the car is still in first, well atleast mine is so there will be no need for downshifting. the race will be much closer.

you would be suprised how much of a difference a slight reaction can make on a race.

better tires... or roll into it. mine will spin some if i stand on it at 10 (tranny still in first) hell sometimes they just spin all the way threw first. sometimes they give a few little chirps and hook. guess alot has to do with the road surface and temp of the road.

im running ****ty goodyears but 235s and lower air pressure. i like traction :D

ok but i raced my friend with a 00 GTP with the same mods i have and i put mine in 1st gear and he left his in drive, when he honked three times i pulled about 8 lengths on him. im not making this up, it was really around 8. and he asked how i took off so fast. i told him and he tried it but from a 55 roll so we were in 2nd gear, and it was a much closer race than with him leaving it in drive. i have a 3.4 pully, 180 thermo, plugs, msd wires, AC delete, and resonator delete. he didnt have the AC delete which i heard is only a 2hp difference

That's because the stock PCM sucks for shifting some times. There are areas it won't go all the way down to first from third, but instead go to second which severely limits acceleration. Nothing a quick PCM tune can't fix, so you don't have to abuse your transmission to get it to work right.

and with downshifting it to first and nailing it. its just more of a jerk, makes it feel faster. but its not

TORQUE FTMFW!!!

Thats what makes it feel faster, increased pressure against the drivers body.

Shift Kits w/ RMVB FTW!!

Wonder if they make a shift kit for the GP....I havnt seen one yet but I dont even know what tranny is in the car, ive been lost the demise of the turbo hydramatic.

yeah i know exactly what ur sayin. i just meant to say that it would be better to race in 1st when goin from a roll. but i guess the pcm and shift kit help out with that. thanks for not leaving sarcastic messages and instead teaching me more than i know now. :th_thumb-up:
