air to air intercoolers

not sure if this has been discussed before, but I'm curious what everyone is running for their turbo intercooler. size, cost and how well they work would be good information. I'm having a hard time deciding on which one to run, for those of you that know me, there should be no surprise.
 


I've looked at them, as far as I can tell they are about the same as the 100 dollar intercoolers on ebay. I haven't ruled them out.

is there such a thing as too big of an intercooler? does pressure drop ever become a factor? does it make you nervous to drive around without the bumper?
 
Not sure if it matters how big. With pressure drop I don't worry since I'm pushing a lot of power. I believe if you get a good quality IC then it will help cool the air which pressure drop won't factor too much.

I do get a little nervous without a bumper support. I worry more about other assholes on the road. It's not a DD so I don't mind too much. I did make a chromoly bar to help but been too lazy to put on.
 


too big is mostly weight...why haul around weight thats not reducing temps to anything lower than ambient. sizing should be for max flow if its a drag car or less if mostly street. bigger usually means less pressure drop from restriction, density increase from cooling is a drop in pressur by itself, not replated to the actual flow restrictions of say...a too small core.


if you had heavier mounts from both lopped off ends of an alum bumper welded to the cores tanks, you could make the core a structural part of the cars crash protection....it would provide at least as much protection as the aztek alum support does

our cooler only required notching the lower portion of the supports cross tube, and that was manly to increase airflow to the upper core than needed clearance.
 
yeah. of anything I want a 3-3.5" core that covers the whole condenser opening.

that way youd minimize the air ducting for making sure no air bypasses it
 


when you say condenser opening, are you talking about the radiator or what?
to clarify, i want to make sure that i dont get any air bypassing the IC/and cooling components. to that end ive closed off as much of the front end as i can. any air entering the engine bay is forced through the coolers. covering the whole condesor/radiator opening would make the radiator fans much more effective with the IC in stop and go traffic. it also helps when your doing top speed runs maxing third gear at over 150 mph in the 1/2 mile events. good cooling and airflow management can go along way towards stability

I still have AC. LOL. Practically full weight too.

we just need to find a good, recently replaced compressor in the JY to swap in and it'll be up and running. im certain that we are over full weight even with all the weight savings we've got in it
 
I see what you are saying, thanks for the clarification. I don't plan on deleting the ac, even though the hottest the temperature gets here in Wyoming is 90, that is still plenty hot enough for me to need/want the ac. I have been considering doing some weight reduction at some point like taking the back seat out, removing the sun roof and fiber-glassing over it and a pair of racing seats in the front. I don't want to get rid of all the creature comforts, but would like to lighten up the car a bit.
 
marshall, i wouldnt go any smaller then the TR10 from treadstone. if you do, you might as well just get a used cartuning intercooler

I was looking at the tr10c, it's cheaper than the tr10 and ha a center in/out so it can be more efficient. I would just need a 3" to 2.5" step down for the piping I have
 


if you plan on keeping the bumper support Center in and outputs the high flow path in a blocked area we have bottom in bottom out and that area of the car gets the brunt of the air passing through towards the radiator. so you will want to take that into account.
 
Don't forget I have one for sale in my post... It's from CX Racing Full size 3" in/out 25x12x3 IIRC. I can measure it in the morning.
