Quaife and Torsen folks

i know its not a popular topic but looking for more info that i havent found.

i recall the torsen's needed an upgrade for washers, i recall dyno tech did the modifications back in the day.
well it seems the quaife i have does as well....the beginnings of spalling from the cross drive gears touching the case.

some at the ends with the oil/lube entry holes but the worst at the two axle gears where they touch the case

it is a really low mile unit but its starting...though some seems to be from burrs that were never removed.

im cleaning it up, having fun removing the chipped planets and worn pins on the OEM side... might grind/chrome/grind the bearing journal (rust got it fairly well in one area) im going to get the case and the cross gears nickle coated and toss it in... im looking at materials to machine out thrust washers now for the planets

just wondering what folks remember

You're going to want to talk with Dave or PRJ, I know they have the part numbers for the washer upgrades. Normally 2 steel washers on the end of each planetary would weld together and replacement is one steel and one bronze on each end. I'll dig up some pictures later when I'm at home.

yyeah I know it goes on the thrust side

is the gmr torsen like the typical torsen depiction with straight side spurs? or is it all helical like the quaife?

well some pics to enjoy, definitely low mileage but it needs work...half the damn galling would have been prevented if quaife had deburred the damn things of the machining flash...oh well

im looking at 606 bronze washers on the two primary side gears but i believe the helix cross talking gears would be fine with some .010 teflon discs.

i was looking at a carbon fiber material but the teflon seems smarter

you can see the galling....directly related to the burrs on the lubrication/drain holes

the center bellville stack is .120 taller than the housings assembled dimention, these things are putting a crapload of force into the axle gears, likely contributing to the galling there....ill probably replace two bellviles with a solid spacer so that it only has .030 tension....this with the bronze as a much better fitting surface (they removed alot of material unnecessarily lessening the surface area for the drivers side axle gear to thrust against

this pic shows you the issue with the drivers side axle gear....barely any surface area

btw the oem planetary gears and pins are chewed up...having a ***** of a time removing the pins....might just EDM through the gears/pins and just push out the parts after since its the pin galling on the thrust washers that is keeping me from removing em.
