Help with my GTP

Hello I'm new to this site I recently bought a 1997 Grand Prix GTP 3.8 Series II Supercharged. It will idle for a short amount of time then stalls because the fuel pump kicks off.. It will start after a few minutes if u pump the gas pedal after cranking. The pump an filter have 200 miles on them I had the ignition module tested also which was good. Any explanations?

Would the crank sensor cause my car to stall after running till the motor began to heat up?

Based on your symptoms that you posted at Fixya, thats what I was leaning towards. The easiest way to know for sure is after the engine shuts down, pull the #1 spark plug and check and see if you have spark there. If you dont, its likely the CPS or crankshaft position sensor is bad.

Ive had this sensor go out on me twice, both times it exhibited a different set of symptoms, but symptoms that are common to a CPS failure. The first time it went out, my car would stall, but start back up usually right away or within a minute or so, the TCS would shut off and my tachometer would read 0 (the CPS provides the tach signal) if the engine didnt stall.

The second time it went out, I could go out and start my car to let it warm up and within 5 - 10 minutes, it would shut down on its own and would not start back up until it had sit for about 15 - 30 minutes. When it shut down, I would have no spark at all.

The two important clues here to me is that it shuts down after running/idling for a few minutes and that it doesnt start back up right away. There could be other culprits, but the crank sensor is the more common culprit in this case.

Hmmm, I may be having the same problem? Lately I'll go out and start my 02 gtp and let it warm up for about 10 min. Then when I get in and put the car in gear the car will stall out but it has always started right back up. Cps?

I think, depending on where you get it from, its around $35 - 40. Not terrible, its just a little labor intensive to replace. The first time it went bad on me I was on my honeymoon, but I already knew what the issue was and so I had a shop replace it. I brought them the sensor and they charged me $65 to replace which at that time since I was in no position to do the work myself was a pretty good deal to me.

That doesnt sound so much like a CPS actually. In fact I would go as far as to say Im pretty sure its not the cause. I could be proven wrong, but the CPS seems to produce a fairly consistent set of symptoms.

bummer... doesnt seem to hard i think i may try it myself 65 would be nice tho can i get that tested on a diagnostic or trial an error pretty much?

You probably could get it tested, the bad part about it is that you would likely have to pull it off the car to do so and well, you see the catch.

ok looks like i better get to pullin it... thanks for the help..
I also realized that my heat doesn't work until its on max. Could that be related electronically?

No, unfortunately thats another matter entirely. Well at least Ive never seen any correlation between the CPS and the fan speeds not working correctly.

That problem is more likely due to a faulty blower motor resistor. Could also be an ignition switch issue but more likely the blower motor resistor.

The resistor is located in the blower motor housing, that is located just to the right of the center console up against the firewall. It can be a challenge to replace, some say its better to pull the whole motor down and replace it.

The part itself is around $25 - 30 depending on where you get it.

honestly when i rerplaced my crank and cam sensors it took maybe an hour once i got the right tools...if you have the cash i would replace both while your in there. but your in good hands with scotty! best of luck man and welcome!

so your car acted the same with runnin a few then stalling out after warming up?? my fuel pump is currently out till my new one comes today so i cant check the number 1 plug..
