Spark Plug Heat Sheild?

Hello GP,

Im new to the forum and i would like to say hello to all technical and non technical ppl. These forums are the best for people like us!!!!

So here what i got:

2005 Grand Prix GT
150KM

I had a 93 GP and i was able to change the spark plugs and wires without any issues (besides the rear 3 PITA). I'm now trying to change the plugs and wires on my 2005 and i see these heat sheilds around the wire boot? WTF? I tried to pull on the boot....nothing. Is there a way to get these off or im i not pulling hard enough?

If its been a while since they were last changed, and if no boot grease was used, they may be a little stubborn. Usually you have twist the boot to loosen it then pull on it. If you have a spark plug boot puller tool, that may help some too, but it may be difficult to use on the rear three plugs.
 
Nope. Be ready to break some wires when you try and pull them off. They are easy to fix tho. Just recrimp the end on.
 
thanks for the help guys.. ill try this weekend.. ill also get some spark plug pullers just incase. Im going to replace the wires also.. could i just hack them to s%$t?
 


Well I dont know that would help, but if you get new wires then you can be a little more aggressive in pulling off the old ones.

Like removing the plug from the wall...grab and pull the PLUG and not the cord to remove.

Twist clock wise as you gently tug and twist. Works every time.

When you reinstall...put a pea sized drop of dielectric grease in the boot for the plug, as well as the coil. Not only helps keep the moisture out, but keeps the corrosion down, and makes removal next time even easier.

I have had the same problem recently on my 97gt. I use a pair of needle nose on the shield and pull on them. If your hands are small enough you can do this on the back 3 also. Twisting them also has worked in the past.

thanks for the info thus far. I have changed the front three but im having problems getting to the back of the enigne for the other three. (Phat arms) lol. can someone give me directions on how to reach the rear? I heard something about rotating the engine foward? Any Ideals will be great!!

Disconnect the dog bone mounts. Rock the car forward until engine tilts as far forward as it will go. Use the parking brake to lock the car where the engine is tilted forward.
 
Nope. You can freely move the motor back n forth with it in Park as long as you take the front "Dogbones off \ Engine Mounts." Takes 2 15mm wrenches i believe. Once you get those out of the way have someone in the car ready to set the E-Brake and you pull the engine torward the front of the car. As soon as you have it as far as it will go forward tell the person to set the brake.

It will now hold the engine far enough forward to remove the back spark plugs.

TIP- If possible remove the engine pulling brackets near the spark plugs. This will make the job 10 times easier to remove the spark plugs now and in the future.

I plan to do plugs and wires in the next few weeks. Do the heat sheilds need to go back on if they are damaged and come off? Or, do they generally stay in place? I have a bent needle nose and a needle nose vise grips to pull on the boots. Thanks in advance.

I’ll bite just because I’m bored. My opinion on heat shields is use them, some people toss them because of aesthetic concerns. If you buy a quality set of wires theoretically you don’t need to worry about using the shields. Before you even ask, quality means a set labeled as “life time”. The heat shields do not “stay in place”, they slip right off after you take off the spark plug boot. And as far as breaking them, that won’t happen unless you take a hammer to them.:th_peaceout:

How did it go? I'm planning to replace the plugs in my '05 L26 next weekend. Just picked up 6x AC Delco 41-101's. Don't know if I'll replace the wires or not.

Either way, I think I'll post some pics of doing mine but any advice would be appreciated.
