Finalized LIM gasket plans

you know nothing jon snow!! the tensioner stays on, its part of the alt bracket.

if its 5 bolts and a plug id be surprised. you dont even have to take the cable off the alt, flop it to the side.

lim job was like 30 bolts, but that was do able right? lol

Basically

You'll be pissing away money having a mechanic change them for you. Has nothing to do with you having the cash or not. It's a matter of pure laziness at this point.

Ok, either I'm missing something, or you're missing something. The coolant elbows are part of the tensioner assembly. How would I get the elbows out if I don't remove the assembly????

It's a matter of time at this point. Scotty said the LIM job should be around 3 hours IIRC. It took me like 7. Tensioner assembly should take 30 minutes, next it turns into a 3 hour job. Not to mention bleeding the system and cleaning the coolant of the ground. I'm pretty busy this week and it needs to be done right away.

So you don't have 30 mins to save yourself some money. Scotty recommendation is what it takes 99% of the guys here.. Your in that special 1% that made it harder then it really was his not to blame (did I really just say that). Let's not make it even more complicated then it really is clean up is simple spraying any coolant on the ground with the hose.. I know super hard.

I didn't make the LIM job more complicated than I had to. I removed everything that needed to and nothing that didn't. It's not like I took the heads off to do it. It was my first time, come on give me some slack. I had to use a pry bar to get the damn elbows out. If I have to again, I'll break something. Look, more money to fix it.

Didn't you have several hiccups during the whole process like leaving off the oil filter gasket, then the car not running right then some other stuff that should of had nothing to do with a simple lim job?

Yes, the only really bad thing was the oil filter. The idling normaled out and the brakes got better so those weren't problems. Getting the car and apart took around 7 hours. I was outside for a total of like 10 or 11 hours and the last 3 or 4 were cleaning up the oil mess.

If you hate working with coolant, buy this:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A6AS6LY...&qid=1438598613&sr=sr-1&keywords=lisle+funnel

If you hate the driverside axle buy this:
http://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-82...8719&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=gearwrench+82248

Those are your two tips of the day.

I'd buy the spill free funnel, but I don't see anymore coolant work in the future. Unless the WP goes bad, but I don't see that hapening any time soon. And $100 for a pry bar!? Thanks, but I'll use what Ricky's friend uses, a jack handle.

If you buy that funnel when you don't plan on using it, you'll have it when you need it and ... you'll wonder how you can be so happy about a funnel.

Prybar.. $100 is actually a deal, that's down from $120. Ask Scott.. it's worth it.

The handle is my best friend ;)
but still if you have the money buy some tools for future jobs - if not, then it just takes a bit longer. No biggie.

So did I read correctly when you said the coolant elbow is part of the tensior assembly? I thought the lower elbow was ONLY part of the 1997-98 tensior assemblies.

Anyways. Get the alt off. Replace elbows. Lube up new o rings. Re install. I get it. You're new at this. But common problem solving skills required ;)

On the hours to do the work..... Let's keep in mind we are talking to a guy and this was his first time out.

My first LIM job took me the better part of 7-8 hours. If you aren't in a rush, have to make trips to the store, it's hot out and you whine like Scottydoggs, or you simply are over analyzing things. It's going to take much longer. On average it takes me 2-3 hours depending on how fast I'm trying to work. I don't look up torque specs because I know them off the top of my head. I also know each tool I need and where I need it, plus the toolbox is large and in charge with good organization.

Now..I knock this job out in 2-3 hours max.

Elbows. I'd unhook the negative battery cable. Pull the belt and coolant overflow out of way. Pull 3-4 bolts and flop the alt back on the motor w/o unhooking the cables to it. Another few bolts and the tensioner is off, clean the old elbows and the holes they go into with steel wool. Lube o-rings, slide new ones in with tensioner assembly. Put alt back on and fill with coolant. Note how I didn't drain the coolant. That was automatic when you pulled the tensioner. This job should take a first timer 1-2 hours max.

The tensioner assembly on my '01 has two coolant elbows, one that runs from the LIM to the tensioner assmebly, and one that I think runs from the block to the tensioner assembly? I think the lower one goes into the block. On older models, I think they only took one elbow, but don't know if it was the top or bottom elbow.

Thank you for understanding.

FWIW ... all years have what I consider to be two elbows. However 97/98 W body had the tensioner with one of the elbows cast into it. Still two elbows, only one replaceable and one needs an o-ring off the second elbow.

The lower elbow goes into the timing cover and explains why the second elbow became plastic. The techs were wiggling the tensioner from driver to passenger side of the vehicle and cracking the timing cover in that area as it's thin. Then the timing cover also needed to be replaced.

Anyone that want's pics.. say the word.

You don't mean nuttin... using a jack handle to take out driverside axles when it could be a "flick of the wrist" as Scotty says.
