Downshifting an automatic trans

im not sure where this should be posted but i dont understand why some people dont downshift in an automatic trans when racing. i have a 97 gtp and i love downshifting to first and doin 25mph rolls against people. if u leave it in drive then it takes time for it to downshift by itself when racing from a roll and that is costly time.
this does wear out your motor mounts because the engine rocks forward and back. other than that i suggest to experienced people, who have an idea of what im talkin about, to downshift when racing from a roll.
heres the mph that i downshift at
from D(drive) to 2nd-50 to 80mph
from D(drive) to 1st-0 to 30mph
try it out if u havnt already and see what u think. and let me know if u think its bad for the car

Um, this wears out your trans, manual 1st and 2nd (when you put the shifter there) are different than the 1st and 2nd that you get in standard drive, line pressures are raised, and IIRC there is a few different parts used since 1st and 2nd are mainly designed for towing and engine breaking, if you want fast downshifts, please save your trans and just get a tuned PCM to adjust the down-shift times/speeds

^^^^Hey now. none of that.

I downshift to slow my car down and not use my brake lights while passing cops... but other than that.. I feel it would heat up the tranny fairly quicky manully shfting it.

If you get a PCM tune, it virtually eliminates shifting. 1st gear goes to 55, 2nd gear goes to 98.....

wouldnt that cause the engine to go past its 6000rpm redline, and be very bad for it? or does it not work exactly like that??

ive noticed when im cruising along, then i go to put my foot in it, it takes a moment to shift to the appropriate gear, a longer moment that what i'd like, so i was considering a tuned pcm to fix this, but i dont want to do any damage to the drivetrain... any input would be great

It takes you right to 6k...adds timing...more power.

It wont damage drivetrain. It adds just enough shift pressure to keep the clutches in tip top shape. It will also eliminate skipshift.... it will drop to the right gear instead of waiting.....

PCM tune will really wake your car up.

skip shift is when you mash the throttle in fourth, and it skips thrid and down shifts straight to second, it will also shift from 3rd down to first.... This is what perf shift enables:p

Down shifting an automatic tranmission at normal driving....down a hill ect ect will not hurt anything. Holding it in a particular gear at wot will hurt it.

I do it every once and a while.
I mainly only do it when i am slowing down drop from d to 3 then 2nd to help slow car down when i want to be lazy

Nothing wrong with using the lower gears for engine braking. That's what they're there for. Using them to treat the tranny like it's a manual = epic fail.

I'll do it occasionally in the summer coming to a stop (shift to 2nd, then to first when I'm sub-20mph). Windows down, and the car just softly growls. Love it.

:th_scratchhead:not all GTP's came with Performance shift.........:th_shakinghead2:

well yeah i dont leave it in first gear. i will shift it when the rpms get too high or when it would normally shift. i just get bored of leaving it in drive the whole time so i downshift every now and then. thank you for not leaving a smart a** reply.
