Replacing Oil Pan

I am stalling to replace a rusty oil pan in my 2004 Grand Prix. I have already purchased a new oil pan plus gasket. I looked underneath the car a few weeks ago, it looks simple enough, however a portion of the front end of the oil pan is hidden behind a cross bar. As a sophomore handyman, am I biting off more than I can chew or should I take it to my local mechanic so he can smack me with a few hundred $.
 


its not that hard to remove. hell i pulled an engine just to change rod bearings. personally i would pull the engine then you have all the access you need to get to all the bolts on the pan. even the ones by the flex plate
 
i just did a oil pan gasket, along with every other damn gasket there is. the rear cover likes to leak so its worth it to just rip the engine out to fix that gasket.
 
I had the local shop quote me approx $700 to replace (oil pan and gasket) mine a few months back in my 01 GT. I have tackled alot of simpler suspension repairs but this one looks a little beyond my ability.
 


I guess my question would be; Is it easier to hoist the engine, or drop the cradle and support the engine/trans using lumber?

I've done 2 pan gaskets, but both times was during a trans install, and the cradle was on the other side of the garage.
 
if you were to lift the engine a bit leave everything hooked up to it, then take the motor mount bracket off the engine it shouldn't be that bad.

ive seen a vid of it done that way ^^^
 


I suppose it would also depend on if you had access to a hoist. I cradle drop would be an option if you absolutely could not get your hands on a hoist.

I saw that vid. Felt bad for that dude. Working out in the cold on a dirt driveway. No fun.

Thanks Scotty, pulling the engine is way out of my league, fortunately my nephew is a mechanic.
