98 gtp CPU upgrade

Hey guys! I am actually posting for a friend who is new to the car community. He bought a 98 GTP that needed some mechanical work a couple months ago and now it runs great. So now he's looking for a little more fun, and I'm assuming a software upgrade is where it's at on a SC car. He just picked up a $35 eBay intake which looks fine(filter on a stick right?) but otherwise car is stock.

What are the main well vetted companies that make CPU upgrades for this car?

For or mine I just have to plug a computer up to the obdII port in case I change files. For these do you have to change the whole unit? Thanks.

Honestly, there really isnt a need to "tune" the pcm in the car right now. The stock calibration can more than handle what the car puts down for power, it's actually overally safe but in a good way so the car doesnt knock itself to death and blow up. Sure there are things you can tweak to make better but if staying mostly stock it's prolly not worth the money.

I'd steer more towards another mod instead of doing anything computer related. Something like a 3in downpipe or suspension mods if he is not looking to spend a ton of money. The downpipe (just an option) would reduce knock and free up some horsepower already there and make the butt dyno feel faster.

There are companies that sell the computer as a whole aka a canned tune or there are software programs like DHP or HP Tuners that can tune the factory PCM an unlimited amount of times without ever having to buy another computer.

Thanks for the link. Was trying to search around for the "safely modding" link to no avail. Next question was going to be for the link lol.

your welcome . focus on getting the car, "breathing", better before anything else . intake - exhaust. for the intake go with the 9 inch cone filter from either spectre or K&N . considering the price difference the spectre should be a no brainer.
here's another very useful thread about upgrading the brakes.
