1999 GT Coupe

Thought I'd do a thread on my GP, my mods will take FOREVER to do since I'm currently working Part Time, plus side is though I get parts discounts :th_biggrin2:

Just bought my first Grand Prix, a White GT Coupe this past Monday, and have been planning stuff since! In case you didn't see my intro, it's a 1999 with a new 3800 Series II that was installed 3 years ago, car wasn't driven much since and has only had 30k or so put on it since then, car itself has 167,6xx miles on it, a new Radiator was installed along with a new Starter when the engine was installed. It's the Black Leather interior(perfect BTW!) with the heated seat, HUD, DIC, has a JVC Headunit, aftermarket Alarm with Keyless Entry, Tinted windows, rear defrost. The girl I bought it from was asking $1500, I went and looked at it, drove it after I talked to Booba about what to look for the night before, found it needed struts, a tune-up, the power window motors replaced, sunroof fixed, fog lights fixed, have a squealing pulley somewhere.. asked her if she'd take $1200 for it after the test drive and she said yes. Only issue was she didn't have the title, she broke up with a BF and he took the title, so I gave her $600 to hold it til Monday, which finally rolled around after a day and a half of anticipation.... everything at the Tag Agency went smooth and I walked away with the keys and the alarm fob.

I then gave it a tune up, used NGK TR55's, Bosch Wires(better than the Duralast brand I stock at work), found the route cause of why I didn't have Fog's, vacuumed it out, and found out the passengerside wiper arm is stripped on the mounting hole, also rotated the Dog Bone Bushings... Then the Tuesday it died on me while sitting at a stop sign, then would act like it was back firing and such under throttle, had to put it in neutral and rev it to keep it running(making some people think I was trying to race I guess cause they'd gun it at a light), Pulled P0102, P0134, and a P1133 code, first two I thought were O2 but were actually MAF after talking with Booba. So I bought some carb cleaner and a new air filter(will make a homebrew HAI later) and proceeded with cleaning the MAF, the TB, the IAC as well, old filter was NASTY which probably explains why the MAF was messing up, TB had a bunch of tan **** come out of it, same with IAC. Buttoned it all back up and it sat for a day, was busy with other things..

So today rolls around, took the car around town a little(my town is kinda small but not too small), got it up to OT and all was well, Throttle Response was WAY better than before, hooked up the code reader while I was at work and erased my codes so my SES light would go off(annoying little ****ing thing).

Here's a few of the same pics from my Intro thread:

First upgrade is gonna be the Impala front brakes, mine still have quite a bit of life left, but I'll buy the parts to have when the time comes.

Just a heads up, don't clean the maf with carb cleaner, use maf sensor cleaner. Costs like $5 and will last forever, I still have the can I bought years ago. Carb cleaner is too harsh. Silver tq stars are my favorite wheels on a gp, looks good!

Lookin good, needs debadged, lol. Think you'll keep this one?

You tryna make a funneh? That ****in F150 was something else, I'm glad I'm rid of that ****er, never again will I buy a truck that started out EFI that's now carb'd and still running the TFI-IV system...

MAF, IAC are cleaned again with MAF Cleaner. SES came back on for P0135 - Heated O2 sensor fault on Bank 1 Sensor 1.

Damn rain has been coming down since yesterday, three streets over from my house the fire dept is doing water rescues, had a couple tornadoes 15-30 miles south of us. Knew it was gonna be pretty, I work 2 streets over, which is right off main street here in town, the streets behind main is what flooded.. rain was coming down fast and hard last night and the drain couldn't drain fast enough, so it flowed down the side of the building along with water from the parking lot next door and formed a mini river....

My sunroof doesn't work, barely moves up and back down, didn't move down far enough and now I have water in the bezel around the damned sunroof...... fml!!!!!!

Uhh, something's happening :)

Got the pin stripe off the door then it started raining again, so I couldn't get the badge glue off. Oh well.

Car needs a wash and wax big time.. :D

Thanks! I appreciate that! It's not where I'd like it to be currently though, I'm so OCD about little things that I have to have everything working before I mod stuff... although it may get Silver Torque Thrusts before I start on the struts... :D I need to get some Vogtlands..

They make TorQ-Thrusts to fit these cars? I did not know, must go look.

Looking better already on the de-stripe and de-badge.

FYI on the sunroof... my 99 GT coupe has the same trouble. The regulator is probably broken in a "not feasible to repair" way if its like mine. Reaches a certain point then jams and may not move, or course with rain coming down.

To fix: Replacing sunroof regulator is actually fairly simple but much disassembly is required to access it. At least its mostly do-able from the passenger seat.

I actually removed mine and attempted to repair it. There wasn't a way without at least cutting metal rivets from plastic parts and that just never goes well. A tiny piece of the drive cord or it's guide had broken off and it just would not go past a certain spot and might not close every time. Of course, like you I had a roof stuck open with rain coming in, and in my case I had to hurry up fix it somehow while I should be working.

Heres the tip- It is possible to pop out the overhead console and through that opening, disconnect the motor from the regulator. This allows manipulation of the glass panel by hand and possibly lets you force the regulator into the closed position while leaving the headliner in place. Use this method to identify a good-working unit in a salvage yard, and you can try it to get yourself out of the current situation on the white coupe. If you can move the regulator to the closed position with motor loose, do so then reinstall the motor. But leave it unplugged to avoid a repeat!

Booba is running a set of them, come stock on many of the Mustangs.

Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna have a looksee on one of my days off on the coming week, this sunroof is just driving me nuts..

Some refer to them as Bullitts.. I refer to them as Torque Thrusts, it's what they were originally called back when they came out.

Ah, OK Bullitts yeah I like the way those look. Visually reminiscent of the Torq-Thrust D American Racing wheel made for disc brake 1st gen Mustangs.

That sunroof deal pulling the motor off the regulator could have you dry inside in about 15 minutes if it goes well. Good luck on that issue, the sunroof is a beautiful thing to have when it works.

Stay dry over there in the meantime, its a toad-floater lol. Steady rain has set in here, a couple hours to your east. Here in Springdale / Fayetteville we get your weather when you're done with it over there. Its soggy out but not flooding yet. Good time to catch some extra Zs or tackle indoor projects, thats me.

Got the motor off, it's new, but that damned window is bound up pretty good, won't open at all and I'm afraid I'll bust it if I try to pop it open.

The glass is tempered, you could lay it on the ground and jump up and down on it. A sharp impact is the only way to bust it. BUT- four little Torx screws will get it out of the way so you can work that regulator whole-heartedly and possibly use persuasion from tools. Simply removing the glass panel may allow the regulator to move since its a toothed plastic drive cable going down each side. FWIW, if its in a "just cracked open a little" position, you may not get much water inside because the drip pan and drains are still in place. So what rain falls directly through the opening will get in, but what drips off the edge of the metal is mostly gonna hit the pan made into the regulator. Depends on wind.

Some cars have a pop-up wind deflector built in. Screws on from the top of the regulator at the front, under the glass, if so equipped. All of them I've seen at least have the mount holes present. If you take the glass off, check to see if by chance this has broken somehow and is binding up. Try to reinstall the glass panel where it was. Its easy to re-adjust but it has to be fairly exact to not rub the roof wrong.
