downpipe question

So I'm driving down the highway and ran over what I thought it was a small twig.... and nope bigger than I thought I felt it hit the underbody and now I have a hole in my exhaust. I'm bouncing around the idea of just have the shop weld in a straight 2.5in pipe over going stock. Ideas? Suggestions? How much is going rate for an exhaust shop to do something like that? But I have an 02 gt and only 86k on it but I'm planning to mod so it gives me the chance to start with the best place

Where is the hole through?

Before or after the converter??

And changing the exhaust size after the converter will not matter, you'd gain nothing from it as you couldn't ever outflow it. I'd just repair the section for cheap and be on your way.

If before the converter, then you could buy a downpipe to replace everything. I'd suggest a catted downpipe but that still might toss a check engine light because of the high flow cat.
 
So even if it was after the cat and it couldn't be welded would they just cut off the exhaust there and weld a new piece or would it be easier to just replace the whole downpipe?
 
Depends on what they will do and you'd want to do.

Without knowing exactly what needs replacing it's hard to say. But if the hole was after the converter and flange, more so at the resonator, I'd just cut a piece out and weld in a new resonator or pipe.

Depends on what you have available. If you have an unbranded exhaust shop they will be more likely to charge just for the small section of pipe and time. Had one of those in my old town. Might be 65.00 bucks for what your describing. However if you take it to a Monro or similar good luck. I went in one just asking for a small piece of flanged pipe. Said they don't carry pieces. All the could offer was the whole premade section with resonator for 260.00.
