• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Sorry to be lazy but a performance question

I recently got back to the Grand Prix part of the family 2 weeks ago after damaging my Grand Am. Wish I had never left by the way.
Now I have the 3800 series II Supercharged. It has a K&N filter on it but lately as I look under the hoods online I see the Cold air intake or perhaps more direct flow intake. Is this worth my time to look into? I would be fine with more HP and/or increased MPG even if it only by a small amount.

Dump the K&N, clean the MAF that is likely covered in oil now, and make your own HAI as you see in the pics. More noise from blower, same HP.

Thanks I happen to know just enough to get myself into trouble, in the sense Im not a mechanic/gear head. High Air Intake? Basically going off the reference that the tubing is 3" diameter and getting a filter for that size and securing it accordingly? That way I can use much of the existing hardware as possible.

Hot air intake.

Go do some reading.

Then come back.

General Tech section, Safely modding your 3800. Or google. It's been covered a trillion times here. Along with making your own intake threads and How-To's.

Followed the above mentioned check and I am systematically going down the top 10 for safely modding the 3800. However I am now finding that after adding the cone filter my GTP occasionally stalls out at a red light stop. I have cleaned the MAF, oil/ Filter Swapped, what am I missing here? I would have thought that the computer would have compensated for HAI/CAI flow that the car now has.

Swapping "Cone Intakes" isn't going to cause your car to stall out. There's another issue.

When swapped intakes, did you leave something unplugged? MAF, or some sensor on the Throttle Body? or maybe you have a vacuum leak?

I will double check the MAF and other sensors. It was suggested by another car guy that since this causes the car to run lean it might be too lean. I guess that goes back to your statement about the other sensors though. That if the computer is getting all of its information it should not stall out.

Can I clean the IAC and IAT sensors with the MAF cleaner? Perhaps those are the culprits. They seem to be the only other ones in that neck of the woods that might affect this.

Post pictures before touching anything. Bet we can tell you...that you probably damaged the MAF when you removed it to clean it.

No way it's running lean and stalling from an air filter......

What these guys said. There is absolutely no way you're car is running lean due to adding a cone intake. All the intake is going to change, is the sound of your blower. Other than that, nothing at all.

Take a picture and post it here, like Nick stated. Either your MAF is unplugged or it's been damaged. I'm 99% sure on this.
