Re: 85 trans am!!!

So which would be better a LS 5.3 or LQ4 6.0 to take the abuse of boost? I'm working on the 76 firebird motor same time as the 85 T/A motor. I have two 350 and a 305 one 350 four bolt and one two bolt. Plans for the 76 is strip it through roll cage and big motor in it take to the strip only
5.3's are ok and do great on boost with 317 heads and port work. Got a friend that is making well over 700 on his turbo 5.3.

6.0's are better and have more potential in NA or boost builds. Not to mention you can choose between cathedral (LS1) style heads or rectangular (LS3) style heads. HP Pontiac had several articles on taking a LQ block, boring it 0.030 over (4.030") making it a 408 ci, throwing on a Victor Jr manifold and carb and with some heads made well over 500hp & 550 ftlbs tq. They've also done it with fuel injection builds as well.

Ummm...stock 4.8 with ported heads, cam, filed rings and twin turbo did 1100hp...

Yup, they also destroke the crank so it could spin up to 10,000 rpm.

So if I went with 383 LSX cam/ heads/ headers think I can get 450-500hp?

This.....my 403 build is looking at high 400's, possibly break into the 500's "Xfingers"

Re: 85 trans am!!!

So called machine shop they said for $500-$550 they will rebuild the heads and bore them to 2.02 1.60 valve and build them to handle an lsx cam. What's the profile for an lsx cam. And I'm only going need a 650cfm carb right? 700 I think would be to much

Re: 85 trans am!!!

For about $600 more you can get a set of heads from elliottsportworks. A cam might even be included at that price. I gotta ask though...why no fuel injection?

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Seriously Google elliottsportworks. Guy does phenomenal work. A lot of LSx and LTx guys run his stuff. Good prices and great parts.
